Academy CH-53E paint scheme
Posted by nitrojunkie on Wednesday, March 5, 2008 4:06 PM
I am preparing to build this kit and want to do the IRONHORSE version. The problem is I think there is a mistake in the paint code list in the instructions.Color number 11 is listed as FS36320 graythis is the main fuse color.Number 14 is an accent color that covers the top surfaces it is supposed to be darker than 11 according to the illustrations this color is FS36495 Grayish blue then you have color number 15 which is FS36495 also but named Light gray. What gives? I have no complaints about the kit from my visual inspection of the parts. The kit looks to be awesome. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The overall gray is FS 36375, with the topsides being FS 35237.

This clearly shows only a two-tone scheme, with FS 36375 and FS 35237.

Yeah, the Academy Painting instructions are wrong.  No CH-53E in the fleet has a white belly.  I think I used Tamiya XF-19 for the base color.  Some I lightened, and some I darkened.  I used XF-23 Light Blue for the base color at the top of the aircraft.  Again, some was lightened and some was darkened by eye.
