Thanks for the encouragement, Randy; and ditto on those drawings. Thanks.

The second, incorrect kink behind the elevator is partly due to a patch job of styrene sheet that is covering the hole I made when I removed the stinger housing assembly. I decided the housing was too thick when viewed from the aft, and so I cut it off, split it along the original seam line, and am thinning the pieces to a more realistic measurement. When that piece is ready to go back on, I'll take care of that aft tailboom area.

Andy,

I think you really captured the look.  Only suggestions I can give (look at pictures to varify) is the the kink in the bottom should start just forward of the stab (where the double rows of vertical rivets are) and there should be only one kink.  It looks like you have another taper/curve just aft of the stab.  But that said... looks a lot better.

Andy -2,

I've got cross sections around here somewhere but it might take me forever to find them.  Email email them to both of you if/when I find them.

Of course that would be the ultimate reference, Andy, but I have never seen anything like that for the AH-1W. Alas, I'm just trying this out with the Mk.1 eyeball.

  AndyBow [bow]

I never noticed there is something wrong with the tailboom (exept for slightly incorrect rivet allocation)

Anyway - looking forward with interest!

BTW is there any sources for crossections of SuperCobra? That would help a bunch in correcting the profiles.

Like these for example I have of Ka-27/29

Here is my progress on reshaping the tailboom section of MRC/Academy's 1/35th AH-1W. The testbed kit I am working on is a Cobra that my dad built for me while I was on active duty. After a few years of being at home, the skids kept breaking off, etc. So I am giving it a complete overhaul with wire skids and a new paintjob -- and also experimenting with some shaping techniques to give it a more accurate profile. Hopefully I can develop a shaping technique that I will use in all of my future Whiskey builds.

I have always sensed something "off" with the MRC tailboom.... I eventually decided that it was a tad too skinny, as well as too flat on the bottom.

I started by laminating two narrow strips of sheet styrene to the belly of the tailboom, then filling in and rounding off the corners with Squadron green putty to achieve a thicker, more rounded look for the tailboom. I also sawed off the elevators, and will be moving them up higher on the boom, which should be a little more accurate as well. I am not 100% satisfied with the shape yet, but I do think it is improving. I may throw a coat of primer on it to judge the shape better, and see if it needs to go thicker. Questions and comments welcome.
