1/48 Hind helo detail sets?
Posted by Grizzly1970 on Monday, March 17, 2008 8:54 AM

Hey All,

Got a monogram 1/48 Hind helicopter and have been looking around the internet for detail sets and decal options and hopefully some better pilot figures but with no luck so far, anyone here know of any sources? TIA

Can't go wrong with the Cobra Company sets.  They're awesome!

For the benefit of the FSM crowd, I'll post what I posted over at ARC:

I have purchased all of Chris' 1/48 Hind sets except for one, and can say that Cobra Company's detail and service cannot be matched. Stay tuned here at ARC to find out when they will open for business again. The wait will be worth it.

Here is what Cobra Company offers:

Hind Cockpit Detail Set

17 piece resin set includes a completely detailed pilot's cockpit, a new gunner's cockpit and bulged tires for the nose and main landing gear.

Mi-24 Hind Exterior Detail Set

contains exhaust infrared suppressors, infrared jammer and chaff/flare dispensers

Mi-24 HIND F "Twin Cannon" Gunship Conversion

29 piece resin kit contains all the pieces necessary to update the HIND kit. Two cannons with removable cover panel, new optical sensor suite, F model front and rear cockpits, radar sensors, antenna and wheel set.

Mi-24 Weapons Set #1

16 piece resin set contains the complete war load set for HIND models including 4 B8V20A 80mm rocket pods, 4 BDZ-57KrV weapons pylons, 4 9M114 "Shturm" (AT-6) anti-tank guided missiles

Mi-24 Weapons Set #2

30 piece resin set includes 2 KMGU-2 mine laying and cluster bomb pods, 2 9-A-669 (GUV) universal gun pods with triple mini guns, 4 BDZ-57KrV weapon pylons and 4 9M114 "Shtrum" (AT-6) anti-tank guided missiles

Mi-24 HIND Weapons Set #3

22 piece resin set includes 2 UPK-23-250 23 mm twin cannon gun pods, 2 30mm grenade launcher pods in universal container, 4 BDZ-57KrV weapon pylons and 4 9M114 "Shturm" (AT-6) anti-tank guided missiles

Hope this helps,
Andy

Forgot about decals. For those, check out Linden Hill Imports. They have two complete sheets of Hinds from around the world. (and some supposed new releases coming soon, too)

Cheers,
Andy

I also have this kit in my stash, and might build it next, including some of these AM goodies. :-)

I've yet to try AM parts, but most of what I've read about resin is that it's a nightmare to work with, and the AM parts never to seem to fit properly. Hm. So that being said, if I wanted to try just some basic upgrades to the HIND kit, which of the above sets would be a good start for a beginner? Maybe the tires and some extra weaponry?

Thanks!

Porkbits,

Resin isn't a nightmare -- it just takes patience, a keen eye, and a steady hand. If you feel you are ready for it, Cobra Company is probably the finest quality resin you will find. You won't have to deal with deformed parts or bubble defects.

One thing that anyone building with resin has to deal with is clean up of the parts, and removing them from the casting blocks. No way around that. Also, you will need to sand, test-fit, sand, and test-fit again to make sure the parts will line up properly. The resin producers get everything as close as they can, but ultimately it is up to you, the modeler, to make sure they fit to your particular kit.

Resin cockpits usually require a lot of test-fitting and alignment to properly seat the tubs inside the fuselage -- I wouldn't recommend that for a beginner. Putting on resin wheels is comparatively easy, and hanging ordnance is not too hard -- either one would be a good start.

Thanks for the info, Andy.

Yeah, the tires and external weapons seem like a good start. I wouldn't even consider a cockpit at this point in the learning curve.

This will also be my first helo, but that, as they say, is a discussion for another thread. :-)
