Improving Lindberg's HH-3?
Posted by Aaronw on Monday, April 14, 2008 1:22 PM

I picked one of these HH-3 kits up the other day since its about the only option and its cheap. It is a pretty basic kit which is what I expected, and looks like it could be built up fairly decently if a bit bland OOB.

Just thought I'd see what modifications people have made to improve the kit. I've seen some reference to kit bashing with more modern Sea King kits. Any suggestions welcome, also any known problems to watch for in the kit.

Thanks

Hi Aaronw , Here's a couple of comparison pic's of Lindberg's 1/72 scale HH-3E . [I assume you are talking about the 1/72 scale version] . Anyway the first pic is the original HH-3E out of the box build . It builds up nice and quick , there is however a nasty gap [about 2mm] where the canopy joins the front fuselage . I remember having to cut a piece of strip plastic to fit on the top edge of the nose where the front of the canopy joins up . The gap was too big to fill with putty . The second pic you probably have already seen , I fitted a Revell Seaking cockpit to the front because it had a lot more detail than Lindberg's and I cut opened the side door and added a rear floor , seats and gunners . I also modified the rotor housing to use Revell's main rotors which was a lot of work [for me anyway] . So if your looking for a quick build out of the box , the lindberg kit comes up okay , perhaps you could scrounge up some spare cockpit seats and a better console panel to replace what's in the kit , that would go a long way to improving her . I hope this helps . Kind regards John

Your OOB build actually looks better than I would have expected, although the modified one is better.

Are you using the Lindberg kit for your Pelican as well? I know you had a post saying what you did on that build but I can't seem to find it now.

Thank's Aaronw , Here's the other original Lindberg HH-3 , I've since stripped the paint finish and got the fuselage halves apart . It has now become the USCG HH-3F Pelican . You can find some progress pic's on page 4 -titled 'Progress pic's USCG HH-3F Pelican' and a couple more pic's on this current page titled 'I've messed up the paint finish on my HH-3F Pelican' . The two pic's I posted earlier are actually the same model , a bit of a "Then and Now" scenario . Kind regards John .
