Revell 1/32nd Eurocopter EC 145

It has been an ambition of mine to try and motorize a scale helicopter kit but haven't yet done so. As far as I know 1/32 seems to be the largest scale for a helicopter kit at present and logic would have it surely that the larger the scale the less figity it would be to install some minor piece of motor engineering inside. I love the look of the Revell kit of the Eurocopter 145 in Swiss rescue livery, and it's this kit I have in mind for motorizing. Has anybody who reads this entry tried to motorize the aforementioned kit or similar? Or could anybody please refer me to some material, be it printed or on the Web, as to how I might motorize a plastic kit of a helo? I realize that in order to try and motorize a kit I might have to sacrifice elsewhere such as on interior detail, but it would be a thrill to see the rotors turning.

I can't speak to this particular kit but the Testor's HH-43 Husky is already set up to be powered as the original issue was a motorized kit. Might provide you with a good place to experiment.

The HH-43 is the one with intermeshing rotors, very interesting looking helicopter. The box says 1/48 but its really 1/32 at a typical price of $10 or so, its quite a deal.

It is pretty easy to motorize the main rotor.  The tail rotor is the issue.  I motorized a 1/32 AH-1G many moons ago.  It still had all the interior detail as well.  I also put full nav light and cockpit lighting w/LEDs in it.  I used a small motor from a motorized slot car.  It was too tight to spin the tail rotor though.  To replicate it, I used a clear plastic disk with smudge markes for the blades.  It looked pretty good.

Good luck.
