I just saw this today of a soldier strapped to the side of an Apache. While nothing new (the idea), I had never really given this a thought and had never seen it in action.

Yep, its called a "spur ride" and can be used for emergency extraction of downed aircrew or other personnel. There are modifications of the procedure, but that's pretty much the idea.
