Scratch Built WWII Carrier Deck
Posted by Zapper on Thursday, August 14, 2008 6:50 AM

My primary hobby has been wooden ship modeling and recently started to build a 1/48 Hasegawa Hellcat F6F-3. This is my first build since one of the original Monogram kits in the early 60's. It's amazing how much more sophisticated the kits have become.

Anyway, I want to build a Carrier Deck base and think it it should be fairly straightforward using 1/32 x 1/16 bass wood strips and photo-etch tie downs. Anyone have any experience with the tie-downs or any other tips? Also, painting tips for the deck. I'm thinking USS Essex, 1943-44.

Thanks for the input.

Check the back issue archives of FSM; I can recall reading a couple of articles on carrier deck dios.

Hi, Zapper,

Here is the URL for a similar, active thread here in the forum about carrier deck bases:

/forums/983813/ShowPost.aspx

There are links mentioned in some of the posts to some manufacturers of bases and of photo-etch hardware, like the tie-downs.  I think Just Plane Stuff was one, but you can browse that thread and see if it helps.

I'm doing the same thing, but I'm using coffee stirrers as the planking.  I'm making a pre-war US carrier deck section, to use as a base for yellowwings models.

Regards,

Brad

Just a followup, in case the link doesn't work, the thread is "Carrier Deck Sections", in the Aircraft forum.
