Out of the Box, or Do you Frankenstein Your Dio figures?
Posted by Hans von Hammer on Thursday, September 4, 2008 3:33 PM

I build most all my figures from parts, rather than using SOB figures, except for the obvious ones like drivers and seated gunners, pilots, etc... When I first started dio-building, figures were few, and pratically NEVER doing what you needed,, so I got in the habit way back when... Now I see most guys hunting for figures (it seems) that work for the idea, rather than making them fit from the existing "replacement depot" of spare parts.. I've looked around m'self, but I find the cost of 18-20 bucks for a single or pair of figures to be just plain silly... Not that they aren't well-done, just that it's over-the-top for what you get, IMHO...

With stock figures, almost any pose can be done, and far cheaper than hunting down an after-market guy that's holding the cigarette in the RIGHT hand and dropping 16 dollars for it.  Don't take this the wrong way, but I think it just lazy...  When a guy can build a totally unique model that's a trophy winner but can't swap a head, bend an arm, or change a boot from a jackboot toa retreat boot, I ask, "What gives?"... Not to mention that the stockers are soooo recognizable, that it's almost laughable, if the same guy didn't keep showing up on dio after dio..

Sooo... Do you guys prefer to operate or go SOB, or just settle for the poses you can find/afford?  Myself, wifey calls me Sergeant Franken-Steiner because I prefer to operate.... I haven't tried sculpting, other than headgear and such, or adding/removing web gear, life jackets, pockets, etc...

IT all depends on the subject. If I have the parts, I'll make it. But I don't really have that many parts yet so I find myself buying a little more still.

On the bench:

1/35 Tamiya M26 Pershing-0%

1/144 Minicraft P-38J Lightning-50%

Numerous 1/35 scale figures in various stages if completion.

I usually "perform surgery" on mine. I have come across some figures that happen to fit just right OOB. Not very often though. I have occasionally used resin figures. Again, it is usually the razor saw, putty, and sculpting.

I have started to take trips into the realm of modding my figures.  I started with simple stuff, that bandage on the tank commander's arm.  I did some experiments moding the cloak of a russian soldier so it look frayed.  And now im completly modding 2 figures together to make a third character.

I just find it hard to mod figures (without using others) when there in positions like holding rifles or firing.

I do both, although I have found some interesting problems mixing and matching.  Aftermarket figures, such as Verlinden, that are resin are different in size from plastic figures found with the kits or sold by mainsteam kit builders such as Tamiya.  I do like some of the newer after market figures because they have a lot more detail and greater realism.  I tend to get an idea in my head of a diorama I want to do (my next might be a Russian Tank running over Georgia), and then search out the figures I want to put in it.  All of my kits are in a diorama and have figures included.  My tanks are never all buttoned up, unless I can put other figures around it.  I always want my models to tell a little story, even if it is one made up in my mind.  I'm not as good with figures are some I see on this forum and at shows.  When I can, I make my figures from parts, but I also use them OOB if they work.  Lenny
