Hello, would anyone have or know where to find picture's of Darryl Greenamyer's F-104 the Red Baron? All I have found are little or to grainy. I'm toying with the idea of a diorama of his low alt. high speed run at mud flats, Nevada.
The reason is.... I was there, my Dad was one of the official timers. After the trial run Darryl said he couldn't see the exit gate so I got to take our car, a big 4 door tuna boat, out to the center between the enter and exit gates. The center had a big red cercal about 30 to 40ft. around. I parked broad sided so when the F-104 entered the gate and then lined up on the car he'd be good to go.
When the F-104 started down and leveled out, you couldn't hear a sound, nothing. But when he passed you by, BANG and a roar that was just amazing. Then nothing to see but a cherry red dot with wings. He made 4 passes, and to this day it's one of the high points of my life experiences.
One little side story: a VW bug came out and lined up with my car but out to the side line about 100ft. away, I yelled to him that he better open his windows but he yelled back that he didn't want dust or dirt to get in his car. I yelled ok, your choice. Well when the F-104 made its next pass (are you ahead of me yet) POP out came his windshield, slid down the hood and caught on the bumper and folded right up. He just stood there then looked at me. I did a big shrug.
He got in his VW and drove away without saying another word.
Other than that, it was a great day.
