Roots of woody plants work very well. This includes, trees root, shrubs, and some woody weeds. The appealing aspect of using tree roots is that they are in effect, miniature tree branches. They have "scale" bark and make some very nice branch configurations. Scrub the dirt off and set them to dry for a couple of days then cut the straight sections to make your logs.
I usualy stop where they are doing lot clearing or head to the local nursery. There is usualy a plethora of "brush" complete with root balls intact they'll let you forage through.
I keep a large pile in a box in the corner of my garage and "root" through it to find just the right section to use. I don't think anyone could sculpt anything that good commercialy and the best part......its free.
