"The Bridge" Complete! (*update*...natural light pics!)
Posted by Stern0 on Monday, March 2, 2009 7:24 AM

Hey Fellas!

Was excited to get these finished pics posted..I still want to get some natural light shots though (its snowing like hell here so no go today, it would have to be retitled "The Bulge")

For those who have not see this yet: This is scratchbuilt other than the figs and Barricade. foliage is a mix of natural and man made materials, with wire and floral tape trees. water is a clear casting resin with water effect by woodland scenics.

The only other plastic is a mayo jar split in half to form the culverts. There were pics from the beggining of construction but for the life of me I cannot find them. I have included the earliest one I have, I added the grey to the bridge early for my reference. All comments and criticism welcomed.

Really great work done here, Steve. Nice attention to detail. I especially like the exposed tree roots. Congrats on the win at the show!! Big Smile [:D]

Awesome job! Love the groundwork- what did you use for the tall grass and how well did that work with the resin- did you attach them prior to pouring or durring?

Very nicely done in Richmond! Sorry about the run in this poor guy had with a hat Shock [:O]

Chris..Thank you much for the commentsBig Smile [:D] The tall grass is a combo of some real nice plastic stuff from Micheals and the thinner "blades" are from a old paint brush..you can see it a little better in the WIP thread. I put everything in before the water pour, the only thing I had to do was pour some from the bank side where the GIs had mashed it down to get it to fill in...it was no problem. As for the hat man it was no real damage, the tree branches are just very britle..I'm sure some went flying!

Thanks for the nice words words Greg! My magic (or mental illness) is detail..always trying to make it look REAL. I'm disapointed most of the time!Laugh [(-D] It can be a touch and go situation, but you know it when you make it work. When I stop tweaking I guess it's good enough for me. Glad you like it. Looking forward to seeing yours!Big Smile [:D]

Chris, Will get some of those natural light shots soon!

Nice dio...some good looking foilage and water...one thing that might give a sense of more "action" is to use some acrylic gel medium around the legs of the guys in the water to suggest more movement...you could also use these to produce "bullet splashes"...I used that gel to make splashes in DITCY where the water stream impacts the ground:

The stuff is easy to us and dries slow enough to manipulate...in fact, you could use it on dry ground, paint it, and simulate dirt being kicked up...

MR. I used the WS water effects for the first time and was a little leary of what it may do...Check out the log and around the tommy gunners feet in the close up...It was the best I dared!Laugh [(-D] I do like the looks of the product on yours..A little closer to what I wanted for sure. I think bullet hits may be a part of my next water scene!Big Smile [:D]

Col. looking forward to that toot.Big Smile [:D]

Nice! Thumbs Up [tup] I love it! The exposed tree roots are great, but you might want to add a little more soil bbetween them. Just my thoughts. Aside from that, it looks awesome!

beautiful!  that ground work, foliage and water all looks so real in the natural light.  And the figures look great too (you've worked wonders on those tamiya guys, their faces can look like mushed up dough if you aren't really careful with the painting, lol).

Fantastic!

Ok... I give you my stash and all my tools if you give me your skills. Deal?

Doesn't that sentence say enough?

One question though.. What water did you use? How did you stop it from flowing out over the board?

TacoBuff, thank you for looking and for the compliments, you are very kind! I am sold on outdoor photography for any project now! No Contest! Yes, you hit the nail on the head with the Tamiya figs! Faces looked like dough before I got ahold of themLaugh [(-D] The tommy gunner even had a seam down the middle of his face! I had to literally paint the mouth on...it was ok though because I just happened to catch a good expression of surprise. (Pure luck though) I  felt like the were the first Tamiya figs cast..So thanks for the props on the figs..I still feel they are my weak point..and these boys were a nightmare, your comment means that much more!

Huxy, Thank you for the positive feedback! you would get the short end of that deal my freind.....not a even trade at allSmile,Wink, & Grin [swg]  If there was anything to give as far as skill... I couldnt take all your stuff...I'd take CASH!Laugh [(-D]

The water was clear casting resin from HS....I was surprised but it only took tape to contain the "Water" (check out the WIP pics in other thread). I was very worried about the whole water issue...luckily it went well much easier than expected. Thanks for lookingBig Smile [:D]

Great job on the dio...looks phenomenal. Guys like you are the reason us "newbies" are in on this.

Not to sound like an idiot, but is it 1/35 ?

How did you do the stonework on the bridge ?? Is it freehand or did you use a mold ?

I would love to see the progress pics you said you lost. Keep up the good work, can't wait to see what's next.

Brutus, thanks for comments! yes, it is 1/35 scale....The rocks and bricks are scribed into the sheetrock mud freehand...I used a paintbrush handle, sharpened with a knife. It really makes me SICK that I cant find those pics....was going to write a article for the mag...but not now. The plastic jar I used for the culverts also had bricks scribed into them...ill post a pic, also a pic from the back...without those first shots people may not believe I build it...this at least proves that!...Thanks for looking and I'm glad you like it..looking forward to seeing some of your work!Big Smile [:D]

Very nice foliage and landscape details. It looks like a lot of work, but well worth it for the final result.
