Shep Paine Fans, Check it Out.

Shepard Paine was my hero throughout the 70's and remains so to this day.  Back in the day, your were pretty much either a Paine guy or a Verlinden guy .... Shep Paine made me "think" about my presentations and for that I am thankful.  He did two books with Kalmbach Publishing, Military Models and Dioramas, I have them both and they are still relevant today.  Here's his homepage for those interested - http://sheperdpaine.com/

I know for a fact that Shep's TBD diorama was on display at King's Hobby Shop in Austin, TX in 1987... That's the last time I saw it..

To clarify, that's the extended interview book by Jim DeRogatis, not a book authored by Shep himself.  But that's not to say it's not good.  It came out around Christmas, I think, or a little earlier, and it's fantastic.  A must for all Shep fans.  Think of his tips books, but with more subjects, more photos, and a running interview with Shep.

Does the book have all of these dios in it???  I read an article a few years back that tried to track down all of those dios...sadly, many had been stuck in closets and fell in disrepair, and a few vandalized/scavenged at the Monogram offices...some even flat-out disapeared...

I don't remember any 1/72 ones... I think the Eagle kit was the one in Air Superiority Blue? Back in the 70's... If that's the one, their wasn't any dio sheet in the kit I had.. (It was a gift, I don't do 1/72 except for forced perspective work, OR jets that weren't flying in 1944-53, lol..)

I remember that 335 dio, the wrecked hangar was a real piece of work..

Bookmarked.  Thanks HvH.  These bring back some memories.  The B-24 dio article was a huge influence on me in my modelling youth.

It would be nice if a manufacturer or two would bring back the practice of including these types of instruction sheets.

I think you may be getting your wish if Revell follows suit with their re-releases... The B-17 re-release came with Shep's dio sheet of "In the Pink"...

The first Monogram kit I ever got that had the dio tip sheet was the P-61, about 1974 or so...  The second was the M-48 Patton.. From that point on it was a no-brainer that  was gonna be a diorama-builder... 

Something that might be of interest to you Hans, Revell is bringing back the Monogram "Hedge Hog" Sherman. I pre ordered one from Mega Hobby, $24.00.

And many thanks, Hammer, for the link!  I've been tracking down the brochures, I think I lost all my copies when I went into modeling hiatus at the end of high school.  Only a couple of them are posted up at his site, and they're few and far between on eBay.

I really should check out the rest of my parents' attic, they're probably up there somewhere...

Yes, Shep is still active in the club in Illinois that runs the Chicago military miniatures show, and in the MFCA (he was our first grand master).  He's a real gent!

Thank you, Hans. Shepard Paine diorama sheets were the reason I preferred Monogram growing up. He is hands down the the single most influential figure in the modeling universe. His scratch building stands toe to toe with anything I've seen by today's builders armed with considerably more products at their disposal.
