2 Simple Dioramas

Earlier this month I had a stroke. I wanted to get back to my workbench as soon as I could. I had some trouble with getting my hands to do what my brain wanted them to do. I picked a couple of simple kits that I could finish fairly quickly to try and work to get back to my 'normal'. The doctors told me it would be a few months.

The box car was pretty much out of the box. Nice little kit that takes a lot of detail painting. For the Southern Oil I replaced a lot of the plastic parts with wood and made my own base.

I probably wont use these as part of "Davetown". I don't even really want them for anything. Maybe then next think I do will be a new section of my town.

Here's the kits that I started with.

Here's how they turned out.

Here's a link to the pictures I took while I was building.

Dave, they look great! I'm not even a fan of the RR, but the finished are nice .... really. Sorry to hear about your stroke, but I think patience is the key .... don't get frustrated ... your work isn't suffering.

Bottom line .... nice job.

Sign - Ditto [#ditto]

My dad's into HO scale railroads, and I've grown up around them, always have track plans in the back of my head, but after seeing all of your Davetown mini-scenes, I’ve been thinking of going in a type of vignette HO scale scenes with a few tracks and an engine or a few freight cars. I’ve never liked the train kits straight OOB pre painted and with limited detail.

But I have to know- how did you do that rust texture?! That tanker car looks like you left it out in the yard for a few days and let the rain do it’s thing!!

Thumbs Up [tup] very well done.

I’ve always liked the “old train car as a building structure” look and these are some of the best examples I’ve seen.

I did the tank by painting it with spray can red primer. Then I stuck salt to it and painted it with acrylic blue. After it dried I knocked the salt off. Then washes of rust, black, and brown.

Wow, it looks so 3D, like the blue is still flaking off. Thanks for the tips
