Silly question but where to get some clean sand?

I need a very small amount of sand for my diorama groundwork. I've been to a couple of pet stores and they have sand in funky colors like pink and green.

I'm hesitant to go outdoors and dig for sand with a shovel because first of all it makes me look like a retard and also I don't want to bring germs into the house...

you can still dig for some sand. ya got to get over feeling that way...who cares if someone cracks a smile...they dont know what your doing. you then can take it and place it into your microwave (if ya got one) and put it on high for a minute or two to "kill" anything that may be in it!! just a thought!

Use a simple flour or tea strainer to sift the leaves, stones, twigs, or cigarette butts out of what you're digging up.

And go to the beach if you want "real" sand.

What about a 'Childrens Park' Thumbs Up [tup] The sand used in play pits are unsalted and are extremly fine for safety reasons.

Try kitty litter. If it clumps up, sift it  a little.

I thought Kitty Litter was made of clay (and other, organic products after it has been used).

I use kitty litter for rubble and loose looking stones. You can grind or pound it as fine as you want, then color or tint with inexpensive craft paints. If the beach is not close, then Home Depot, Lowes, Ace etc have the play sand in bags.

You could try the local lawn and garden store. They should have some clean sand. You'll probably have to buy a 50 lb bag though...

Or you could try some cactus soil perhaps.

A little from outdoors is no big germ factory. If your worried about it then put it in a metal pan and bake it in the oven at 350 degrees for about a half hour...stirring occassionally. It will be dry and sterile.

There are always spilled or damage bags of sand at a home or garden center...take along a Zip Loc and ask the clerk if you can snag some off the ground/floor.

There are more germs lurking on your computers keyboard and your telephone than in a pail of sand...that is unless you're taking it out of a septic field.

At a cost of about $3.00, by the way...

One thing I did to make "sand" on a recent figure base .... get a can of the textured spray paint in a can. Spray the area and let dry. Then paint the "sand" the desired color.

I did it the easy way. I sent my 4 year old niece out with a shovel and a sandwich bag and told here to fill the bag for uncle Rich from the playground Big Smile [:D]
