Sounds like a good idea. Especially when it comes to trying to fit that new bed or couch through the doors, halls and other rooms.

Thanks, I guess the 1:50 Modeling desk will be fully detailed with kit in progress, etc.

MMF: You may want to use AutoCAD and 3DStudio for that. I find it less problematic than doing thw actual model. It also allows instant changes in finishes or furniture settings. You could also do virtual walkthroughs...

Yeah, I could do it like that, except I don't have the Software.

OTOH, I got all the materials in my Diorama drawer and i think it will be slightly easier to visualise and more fun for the whole Family to play around with the model.


Plus, I am thinking of maybe getting more into this as a method of generating extra cash and maybe also a career change.

I know for one that making scale models of building is expensive there in Japan. Our company sometimes order scale building models from Manila to save costs. If you could set up your own business, you can probably make good money from it.

Don't know if you have ever heard of Takuji Yamada, he is a pro-modeller that started by doing scale model buildings and similar for a living.
He has excellent skill and it is amazing what he produces even after he lost the use of one eye due to a car accident(methinks).

His best Dio, IMHO, is on the cover of his book.
Him and his family standing at his hobby desk looking at a finished Diorama of the very same scene.

Not sure about the cost of ordering one yet, but their use is very common.
We got a weekly tv show that show renovations done on houses and the "before" house is always as a model in the studio.

Japanese really love touches like that.

The problem with using computers is that you are sometimes restricted because you can´t do everything you want. If you are allready building scale models and dioramas a 1:50 apartment shouldn´t cause so much trouble.
A real 3D model is always more fun to look at and even easier to understand sometimes than a computer generated model.

When you are building it, I think you should make it in such a way that you can remove the walls and reattach them. That way you can see the apartment from every angle as if you were actually inside.

I wouldn´t do it that way. It defeats the purpose of a model in a way (it should be a 3D object built using 2D drawings).

Everybody else thanks for their suggestions they have been taken on board.

Great idea and especially helpful if any future occupants have a challenge getting the 3D from the architects drawings as many do.

Also jonasaberg added a brilliant point about having the walls etc demountable since a real walk through is out of the question this will allow you to see the apartment from different perspectives.

The architect who did my brother's place used exactly this technique to see the effect of adding or not a fireplace. In the end it was deleted since it just broke up the flow of the house too mych for the owner's liking.
