create smoke effect
Posted by olddude on Wednesday, September 23, 2009 8:56 AM

need some ideas for creating smoke effects on my dios.  Appreciate any ideas. I am 68 years old and getting back to a hobby that I love. Thanks for your help.

Boy howdy, you asked the million-dollar question... Smoke is a bear...  Cotton is about the only thing that will work and even then, if you don't do it right, it looks like cotton instead of smoke...  Frankly, it's help if told us what exactly you're looking to have smoking...  I've had sucesses with spun glass "Angel hair" and fibeglass insulation as well as cotton, but the glass was used for muzzle-flashes and had grain-of-wheat light bulbs installed...

For small fires like that, I'd use a few wisps of cotton..

Yep. Just don't overdo the cotton. Take a piece in your fingers and rip up a few strands. keep doing that and the size you need. You might do a VERY mild black or dark grey overspray as pure white smoke is somewhat rare. MAybe even light gray. just to give it some tonal variation.

Sign - Ditto [#ditto] Have also had some luck with cotton but it does need color...be careful not to get it too wet with paint, it will get all matted up like a dirty dog!Laugh [(-D] Bobba nailed it with overspray.

Avoid it, if possible.  Big Smile [:D]

Regardless of the trick or technique used, I've never seen anything that looked realistic.

I'd have to see what it looks like in person before I'd shell out any money for it...

If THIS is what it amounts to, I'll pass..

Fiberglass insulation or cotton still look better, IMHO..

Sign - Ditto [#ditto]  Looks more like the stuffing the cat pulled out of a throw pillow. !

When I was a Model Railroader (HOn3 Gauge) I had some "ldle Loco's" that was sitting outside of the roundhouse. I took a Q-tip and spun it in the opposite direction it was spun  then pulled the tip. I would get a very thin whisp of cotton that really looked to be the deal  !

I noticed this smoke generator in a Micro-Mark catalogue. Some food for thought:

Vespa boy:thats what i'm talking about.Somewhere in the FSM article archives is the story of a guy that used a smoke generator to show smoldering rubble, some orange and/or red LEDs to imitate embers in the rubble heap. And if i am not mistaken there was a recorder in there with combat sounds. It seems to me that it would be rather easy to leave some space under your dio. base to accomadate this stuff.Just pop a smoke tablet when the friends show,or at the model show,Hit the switch/es,and taadaa.

Yeah. He had it in a dio with a Stuart and a ruined building. 2005, April? anyway, probably the best, but be prepped to shell out big bucks and some engineering dilemmas. Awesome, but can be pricy.
