Casualties!
Posted by billthethrill on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 3:40 PM

Hi guys,

I am nowhere near ready to tackle a diorama.  Dopey as it may be (I'm 27) I still now and then take out one of those squat boxes you get clothes in on christmas and fill it with dirt and rocks and little plants and break out the little green vs. tan army men and setup a little battle.

One day when I am more skilled I plan to tackle dioramas.  But for now, I'm just curious.  I was looking at a catalog that had a LOT of different figures, but I didnt see any KIA or WIA soldiers.  Can you buy KIA/WIA troops anywhere?  If not, do you do something to the normal figurines to make them appear wounded or dead, or just eschew that type of thing altogether?

thanks!

There's a terrific book, Sheperd Paine's How to Build Dioramas. It shows how to get started in building dioramas, including design and layout. The book does talk about how to show KIA's and WIA's. I highly recommend it!Thumbs Up [tup]

Depends on the time period. There are several companies, Verlinden comes to mind) who make casualties. I think Warriors aslo makes them as well.

Like those who posted before me... Depends on timeline that your going for, but there are choices out there...  I primarily build out of WWII

I just snagged this off Ebay, from Dragon:

I have this as well, just havn't built it yet... I'm saving it for a upcoming dio idea, from Masterbox:

British troops, also from Masterbox:

Just Googled these, trust me... they're out there.

I would go for Verlinden Productions... they make KIA and WIA figures like this... only drawback is that it is expensive around $10-15 per individual kit.

Their website is... http://www.verlindenonline.com/store/index.html

Cool stuff, thanks guys.  I did try google before I asked, but either got tons of modeling stuff that wasnt narrowed down very well, or tons of war stuff with nothing about modeling.  I did actually order a book on making dioramas from amazon yesterday, even though I dont feel like I'm ready yet, it seemed like an interesting read and I hope to start on dioramas once I get a few more models under my belt.  I dont remember specifically which one it was, it hasnt shipped yet and I already deleted the order confirmation email.

You could also try converting figures... I never liked using very many "store-bought" figures on my dios because everyone can tell which set you used...  Figure conversion isn't really hard, it's just tedious (and you'll find yourself striking silly poses in the mirror while you're doing it), but once you get going, you're no longer limited to telling stories based on what figures you can find...  You'll make the figures fit the diorama rather than the diorama fitting the figures... Casualties are the about the easiest to do, since you only have worry about painting one side...
