Dio Noob! A-20 and crew
Posted by fermis on Thursday, February 4, 2010 9:05 AM

This is to be my first dio. I've put figs with planes before, and put planes on ground work, but never everything all together. Not a big, full dio, just a plane and some groundcrew getting her ready to go.

For the plane, I used AMTs 1/48 A-20, and figs are from Monogram and Eduard.

The build, up to this point is here.

For the base, I used a bit of 3/8" plywood and hammered on some trim. A spread on some drywall mud to make the ground a little uneven.

I sprayed that with some primer and randomly with some dark green.

I'll be adding stitic grass and some weeds later today.

The crew has got to get up on top, so I needed to scratch a ladder. I cut thin strips of styrene and pieced it all together.

And here's a few of the general layout.

Tis all for now.

Finished off the ground work with Woodland Scenics static grass and some moss "weeds".

Glue is still wet, so that shows a bit in the pics.

One little dilemma that I have is, I want the plane to be removable for transport and cleaning, but I have two figs on the ground that are attached to the ropes to pull off the turret cover. So, I drilled some holes and put a pin in the leg so they can come off with the plane.

Once the glue is all dry, I'll put the plane on and post some finish pics.

She's going to contest on Saturday! Wish me luck!!!!

Nice work on the grass as it looks pretty realistic to me... not too monotoned.  Yes

Some PSP matting and some texture to replicate gravel made from corral would be good.

 Thanks guys!!!

Hawk, I kinda thought it would be cool to have some PSP(love the looks of it), but being my first go and in a bit of a rush to get it done, I just stuck with materials that I'm familiar with.........baby steps!!!!!

Hello Fermis,

Could you please describe in more detail the materials and the process of applying the grass to the base? The dio is looking very good, I wish you success on the contest. Thanks in advance, have a nice day

 Thanks Pawel,

For the grass, I coated the base with watered down Elmers glue(about 1/3rd water). Just dripped it all over and spread it around with my finger. By the time I finish coating the whole thing, parts of it were already dry, no big deal. I sprinkled the static grass all over(three different shades), making sure to get good coverage. Then squirt it down with water (with a fine misting squirt bottle). With everything good and soaked, drip more Elmers(thinned) all over, all the water helps the glue to spread all over. That's how I do it anyway. Hope that all makes sense!!!

Got her knocked out last night. In hindsight, there's a couple items I'd have done a little different. Little details, fill in the nail holes on the base as well as stain and urethane it. I had lines drawn on to gouge out ruts, so the plane wouldn't look like it was craned into place, somewhere along the line, in  my haste, I completely space out on em. Anyway, here she is.

And my favorite little touch. I added smoke from the "Brass" and pilots cigs using a bit of stuffing from an old comforter.

A couple of the figs have a goofy lean to them in these pics, that has already been addressed.

Thanks for looking, let me know what you think.......that's how we learn!!!

WOW!  I really like the smoke, nice touch!  How'd you get to stay like that?

Thanks 17!

I pulled a pinch of the stuffing about 1/2" or so long and rolled the bottom half between my finger and thumb, a touch of CA to the anchor point, trim a strand or two and vuala.
