Hobby shop diorama
Posted by Don Stauffer on Monday, February 8, 2010 9:06 AM

When I was adding my pics of the ship canal to my modeling web page, I realized I did not have a completed shot of my hobby shop diorama, finished a couple of years ago, so I have added two shots to the page (the first and second shots on page), at;

http://www.usfamily.net/web/stauffer/models.htm

This represents a hobby shop of the fifties, during my teen years, with the kind of models in stock in those days.  Fortunately I had some old model magazines with ads to show what was hot then, and I copied logos from ads to print out for the "boxes" on the shelves.

The diorama is in 1:24 scale.

Very cool, Don!  I can think of only one thing wrong with it--the hobby shop I used to visit as a kid had a lot less open space, it was floor to ceiling kits in half a twin on a small town street Big Smile

Seriously, an excellent diorama!  I like the look of the little kid, with his money out, you can almost feel his excitement, but also feel how hard it is to pick a model to take home.

Great job!

     Wow!  That is really cool.  I agree with Baron though-there does seem to be a lot of open space behind the kid.  Maybe a shelf with more model boxes there?   Very cool though.  I love the window displays.

Hi Don,

    Beautiful work my friend!    That reminds me so much of Apex Hobbies in Tazewell, Va; there wasn't a lot of stock, but what they had was all good (and it was the only one within bike riding distance)

    Lots of nice builds on your site, Don, and enjoyed browsing through them!

Take care,

Frank

Very nice hobby shop. The layout of the shop reminds me a bit of the now defunct Pilot Hobby of Chicago- including the model aircraft hanging from the ceiling. Yes

I do have one request: please add more kits to the shelves. I prefer to remember hobby shops from the time of my youth when they were well stocked. Propeller

Wonderful seeing a model of a whaleback freighter and a 1/4 scale scratchbuilt engine  on your website ! Toast
