miller,
I know you said you hate to make your own but for $15, you can get a sheet of 4'x8' 3/4" mdf and make alot of bases. You can paint them to look like whatever you want, and if you seal them prior to adding any groundwork, they are great.
Otherwise lizargqing had it right, the plaques you can find at the craft shops work pretty well. Also if you hit the flea markets you can always find award plaques and trophies. Knock off the trophy part and you'll have a nice base.
Check the local cabinet shops. Sometimes they have small panels for doors that work great or cast offs they are throwing away.
Trophy shops will sometimes part with award plaques or bases for little or nothing. Especially if they are damaged or mis-spelled. Even if its engraved, you can always cover the engraving with ground material.
Craft stores sell bass wood plates for pyrogrophy, decopage and or carving. Turn them over and you have a sizeable round base.
Michigan Toy Soldier has a section on their website for commercialy available bases for figures and dioramas.
