Smeag ... I think this is an easy fix. Taking stuff out is SO much easier than trying to add to ....

Obviously I'm not there, but it should be just as easy as lifting the head from the base and redoing the immediate area. I think that a cratered look would look pretty cool. Just think about HOW somethig falls .... even a plane from 35,000 doesn't/ would fall straight down. Once something gets to the grown it will still have some forward momentum.

Another way to make the head look like it just slammed home is to make the rest of the base pretty vegetative. And then have fresh "scraps/ scars" into the surface behind the head long the travel path.

I took your advice, I even got rid of the running figgures and Im putting in a radioman, gona call it 'confirming the kill'

Only thing is... it looks like the head was placed there, not like it fell there from 40 meters in the air or so...  I may have to redo the base to reflect a crater, but im not sure how.

Okay, I think I'm the only one who can give the advice you're asking for.

My suggestion is that you make the dio an "After" image: the E.F.S.F troopers, peeking over the severed Gundam arm congradulate each other on surviving the crash of the Zaku's head.

No dust cloud...that just dissappated, and the troopers have survived another brush with death.

I too am a little confused about what exactly you're going for, but I think I have an idea.

In regards to the dust .... you're right, cotton balls just look like dirty cotton balls. I went through something similar a little while back and while I can't remember the exact wording of the advice (but I know Hans gave it) ...

It basically boils down to this .... Modeling, specifically dios, are a snap-shot of time. They represent action, not show it. Dust, smoke, etc, while able to be captured in a photograph, it's very difficult to model it ... and it looks like poop. So what to do ... the best thing we as modelers can do is model the aftermath.

In short, I think the best thing for you to do is to have the "head" already crashed w/ the figs, I'm assuming are riding in the head, already bailed out, rendering aid to injuried and just overall trying to get a handle on the situation. The "hand" providing cover can be hovering there, however, consider the time it takes for "the cavalry" to get to the scene. This will help determine what your figs are doing.

I hope this makes at least a little sense.

With all that said .... I'm getting ready to build a helo in flight ... w/ whirling blades ....

... guess my advice/ opinion just shot itself in the foot!?!?!

I have to be honest, with the pictures you have provided, even with your description, I have no idea of what you are talking about, layout wise.  Maybe try to take some additional photos with things laid out the way you were envisioning them, because right now, I just don't get it...

Maybe someone else can offer better help to you, but with what you've given so far, I've got nothin'.

hey guys, I started this diorama a long time ago, before mosquitocon last year.  I want to finish it, itl just take a tiny bit of work and then placement, but I am having a problem figuring out how to compromise the dio... maybe you can help me.

the origional idea was to have the first kit falling, about to hit the ground, or just hit it and shrapnel and dust coming out from the fall and the 2nd kit giving cover to two figures as they ran. 

My problem is after seeing alot of people try to make dust, using cottonballs, etc, it never looks good IMHO so im not sure I want to do it.

would it still look right to have the same composition I said but without the dust, just the arm giving cover to the figures?

Or would it be better to just keep the head there and weather it like its been there for years with moss and such growing on it?

The kits are finished, cant find my camera pulled them from old threads, there all finished and the base, I took a wire brush and scraped all of that ugly puffy green stuff off then put down some static grass, looks worlds better.
