Hi Brian,

Over here in Ireland, especially in rural areas, we still burn turf (dried out bricks of peat) in our open fires, It burns down completely to ashes. I use turf ash for sand, it's a fine yellow sand-coloured  flour-like powder, perfect for desert sand. On a lot of dio builds I've seen modellers use white powder and spray it a sandy colour, with the turf ash you don't need to. Brush your ground work with a diluted mix of PVA glue, sprinkle on the ashes with a sieve, leave it overnight to dry and shake off the excess ash.

PM me your address and I'll send you over a tub of it.

Here's some on a base I made last year.

Also take a look a Schnobs' W.I.P.   He's been going to town with some same tech. and some wildly different--3 different desert bases on the thread!

This is how I do my DAK bases. I mix Durhams Water Putty with water and white glue, throw in some craft paint to color the mix.  Spread it over the base, spread some crushed kitty litter for a rocky look, along with some fine sand. I set my tank in the mix and make the track marks. Remove the tank and spray some more thinned craft paints to add more color. When dry I do some drybrushing to add contrast.

I have an armor build I am currently working on that I intend to make a display base for.  It is a WW2 Italian tank (in captured Australian markings) that was used in the Libyan desert.  I have browsed a bunch of pictures of the Libya region and have an idea about how I want this to look, but I am debating how best to get the desert sand look.  I am wondering if I should just use a celluclay or Plaster of Paris base layer and not worry about trying to get a sand grain look because at scale it would be too fine to see anyway, or do I try and fine some super fine sand to dust the base layer with?  Is there any other ideas you can think of that would suit my purposes?
