Setting up a German field workshop
Posted by Wirraway on Tuesday, September 28, 2010 6:11 AM

Just brainstorming how I am going to set this one up.  A mobile workshop set up  in the back of a Maultier.  Workbenches, a lathe, bench vices, some welding gear etc.  I would like them to be doing some major engine work on a Panther or Tiger/KT.  I have seen a nice resin set with a couple of V12 Maybach engines on E-bay.  My question, how to show the engine out of the compartment.  I dont really want to have to do a Bergepanther as well.  Would a block and tackle on a A-frame do the job ?  Or would the engine be too heavy for it ?  Cant find a lot of reference photos .  Suggestions welcome.

My friend Panzerjager has a Squadron Panthers In Action book that shows a German field crew lifting a Panther transmission with what appears to be a rather hefty looking truss assembly standing on two tall trussed leg assemblies with a falling block riding on a carriage on top.  He said that a resin model of this portable truss is available but it is kind of expensive.

If it was me I would just show the engine on a wooden stand as if it had already been delivered to the work crews.  As far as the lathe is concerned you would have to determine how it was powered,  mechanically off a PTO or electrically from a generator (a portable generator might add a lot of interest as it could also power up light stands).  You'll have to determine that from the type of lathe kit you have.  Hope this helps.
