Star Wars Storm Trooper Rescue Vignette
Posted by oddmanrush on Tuesday, January 4, 2011 12:42 PM

Hi guys, this isn't really a diorama, more of a vignette but I posted it in Sci-Fi and that forum seems to be a ghost town so I thought I'd post it here as well. I mean, aren't we all Star Wars fans? At least a little bit?

Any how, these are not kit figures, instead they are action figures that I have posed, filled, filed, sanded, primed, and repainted. I love Star Wars and Storm Troopers have always been some of my favorite characters, quite simply for their looks and mysteriousness. But I think the movies portray them mostly in a less than significant light, sort of the drones of the Republic/Empire (depending on the movie we're talking about...) They can't seem to hit the broad side of a barn, can't seem to defeat a hapless band of fuzzy Ewoks, can't seem to deflect the powers of the Jedi upon their weak minds, and can't seem to avoid the laser bolts coming at them. In terms of war movie heroics, the Dirty Dozen they ain't...

So I wanted to add a little human drama to an otherwise monochromatic subject...enter my vignette.

I'm aware that blood isn't always in good taste but I felt it was OK here, being more of a sci-fi theme. It also adds a little more of a sense of urgency, which is what I was going for here. Hope you enjoy it as well...

Comments and criticism is welcome indeed....

Jon

Being a big Star Wars fan myself, I think your little project here is pretty darn cool.  You are right about the 'perception' of the storm troops that we get from the movies (although their 'humanity' does seem to come to light in some of the books).  They seem to be a intergalactic Napoleonic Square in their tactics - just throw enough crap against the wall and you are bound to hit something.  Stand, fire, reload, repeat...

Anyways, I dig it.  The blood... nothing in poor taste about that.  I think it is very artfully done.

I think it looks great. Very realistic. I don't think the blood is in poor taste either. It's not like you went overboard with it, it looks pretty mild and adds to the piece rather than detracting from it.

Boyd, thanks glad you like it! I always pulled for the storm troopers and could never understand how they were beaten in Return of the Jedi. As far as books go, I only read the X-Wing series and some of the other more popular reads by Stackpole, and Zahn like I, Jedi and Heir to the Empire.
What's next? Good question. I really need to finish up the Revell Ju-87 my father built that he gave me to paint. After that is another project from my father, Testors 1/48 A-6. He is a modeler only in the extent that he builds but won't give them a finish. He leaves that to me, which I don't mind as painting is my favorite thing to do. After that, well, I have some GB's running out of time that I have yet to start so I need to fulfill my requirements there.

How about you? Whats on your plate? Gonna be at Mosquito Con in April?

Thanks Griffin and Rick. Glad you don't mind the blood. Thought I'd be taking a risk but I'm happy I didn't over do it.

Hey Jon,

I've got three armor projects all in various stages of completion - my Marder 1A2 Schutzenpanzer is all buttoned up and ready for some exterior work, my Marder III H for 'Marder Madness' is getting some final details in the interior before I button that up.  I've also got a 3.7 cm flak that needs paint.  Then I hope to build a plane.  I need a break from armor...

I won't be at Mosquito Con.  My next show will likely be VallyCon in Massachusetts in March.

Sounds like you have a full plate as well! Not sure if I've ever seen you do a plane before, that will certainly be a change of pace.

I saw ValleyCon listed on the NJIPMS site but that is a bit out of reach for me down in southern Jersey. AMPS East (or a 3 hour drive) is about as far as I'll go. Fortunately, Jersey Con is in October in Mt. Laurel, NJ so I should make it to that one too. Just not sure if I'll have entries or not. I don't have any armor in the stash and my airplanes aren't quite up to standard yet me thinks, but we'll see.

Great dio! I really liked the in action aspect of this build. I think it's cool that you show helping a wounded buddy.

Yeah I don't blame him, I wouldn't touch my personal collection of figures either. These ones I bought from Kohls while Christmas shopping for my daughter. Believe me, there was a little part inside me that detested having to cut them up and dirty them a great deal but I got over it real quick.

One thing that could really add to the dynamics of the scene would be to try to replicate the wounded trooper firing his weapon as he is being dragged...you could do this with some stretched clear sprue tinted red or some other "laser" color attached to the end of the gun...also, a few blood marks/streaks on the ground where he is being dragged would give some sense of movement...

Greatest, thanks for the comment! I suppose you could split hairs if you wanted to and say they are "clone troopers" and not "storm troopers". I prefer the second designation as it sounds better and is more iconic in reference to the Star Wars universe. They are the same entity really.

Manny, thanks for weighing in again and I like your idea about blood marks to imply movement. I'll also try some experiments with stretched sprue and see if I can't come up with something I like.

Love it!

Well done.

I agree with Manny, though, it needs a sense of motion.

It looks muddy, and they trooper is pulling hard to drag his man to safety.  yet there are no footprints!

There ought to be a few deep foot prints with slips and scuffs as he tries to gain purchase on the ground.
