i dont want to give the impression that my idea was the "it" if asphalt roads, but what i did was use an asphalt roofing shingle...worked really well.

as for yours, you have to make the person believe that that is what they are looking at and i can say based on the pic that you've achieved that. Yes

Yeah, You're right. Problem is the Balsa Foam soaks up washes like mad. I have put some lighter ones in there but they don't show up too well. I'll give it another round. Thanks for the critique.

That is pretty cool looking. Keep at it. One thing I have noticed is that the texture and/or cracks in asphalt are often lighter as they catch sandy dirt in them, so a light coloured pin wash in the cracks somethimes add a little interest.

On this one I used light and dark washes

and on this one I used light coloured washes to simulate a sand/salt mix that gets used around Boston

This is a small base I made for a project I am working on. Wanted to post it up for suggestions and critique. It's my first go at asphalt and i'm pretty happy with the way it turned out. It's made from industrial grade Balsa Foam, cracks were added with a steel scribe. I painted it with a mixture of acrylics and dry brushed oils and topped it off with a patchy wash of MIG pigments and some oil stains. The yellow strip was added purely for some color.
