Support Structure Suggestions
Posted by nfrnoman on Sunday, January 25, 2004 1:03 AM
We've all seen the dio of the Huey dropping off grunts in a rice paddy and the entire hovering kit is supported by a wire run through a single figure jumping out the sidedoor....or that type of thing anyway.

Well, I'm planning something along those lines with a larger subject....think 1/72 medium/heavy bomber (24) touching down on a single strut.

I need something with A LOT of rigidity in a single wire (or other material) comparable in diameter to a coat hanger wire. I already know that I'll have to run the support through the fuselage and out to the gear strut - then my plan is to model it as close as possible to the actual strut (where it's visible) and then turn it back on itself under the doirama board - forming a horizontal U.

I've contemplated actually having a single U-shaped piece cut from a sheet of 1/16" steel and grinding it into the exact detail configuration I need with my dremel.
But - I sure would like to find something easier...

Any suggestions?

You could try lexan plastic rod. It can be bent to any shape when heated and you can even get iit in clear to hide it better. It is very rigid and will hold quite a bit of weight. Another option is aluminum rod. Also bends easily and will support a good amount of weight. I used aluminum rtod to suppend a 1/72 B-17 in flight. B-24 can't be too much different in weight.

The aluminun or plexiglas ideas will work nicely. You could also try brass rod as well.

There was a nice dio of a Monogram 1/48 B-17 doing a one wheel landing in the old Scale Modeler several years ago. Very impressive, I think he used the aluminum rod trick (or was it a coat hanger) and ran it thru the gear. There was also a dio of an A-1H Skyraider suspended by its tailhook over on ARC http://www.aircraftresourcecenter.com/
on Jan. 20th. (He called it 'catching a wire')
