I would like to do this. I'm a little confused about the base size though. Last I read it sounded like 36" square max. Need to know to design the thing. I'm looking at about 24" or so each side. Is that ok?

Also, where's the roster?

I'll do a (deleted) on the (deleted) at (deleted), being inspected by (deleted).

1/72 of course.

Hans, ....  this GB really piques my interest in both participating and in actually making a dio again, as the last one I made was back in..  '82 when I made a 1/72 dio of the invasion of France (from the German POV) for my middle school French class.   Call me a noob in so far as dio's are concerned.

I have an idea that's been kicking around my head for a while, I just might like to try it out here.... just to be clear on the rules thus far-

* finished and started kits are OK, but the base must be started after the jump-off date (tomorrow)?  I've got Mystery Item 1 almost finished and 2 more Mystery Items that are in the build stages that go with, and are related to, Item 1.   The figures I want may take some sourcing/god-forbid-scratchbuilding to acquire though...

*11"x14" or mostly thereabouts.  This could be an issue with my Great Idea, but I haven't physcially laid anything out yet, so who knows....

*amalgamated rules from AMPS and IPMS and Hans hisself has final say.

*229 day run (this should be a full year please- IMO all this 229 stuff is a little old and altogether not that funny)

If you and everyone else in this GB can handle having a loose cannon in the room, I'm IN.Stick out tongue

Sounds likme a plan. Once its up i will post some pics of the kit as it stands now. I will just enter one for now, but if its allowed, and i have the tiome left, i may well enter a second.

I know I haven't posted the rules yet, but one will be: Only one (1) diorama entry per contestant... Feel free to build all you want, but pick your best work to enter...

Sept 1 works for me as well.  Have a few ideas floating around, just need to make a decision.

Good luck to everyone in the path of Hurricane Irene - luckily  we're only getting some wind and rain here in Charleston.  Some advice to those in the path - evacuate if you are ordered to do so.  I was here in Chas for Hurricane Hugo back in 1989 and rode it out - not a good idea.  One of the longest nights of my life.  Afterwards we had no power for 15 days.

Sept. 1 is ok for me, I hope. We`re about to get whacked by Irene...by Saturday night/ Sunday morning. Tired my kids out by making them run my stash up to the 2nd floor.

Sept 1st sounds good to me. Are you going to start another thread or use this one.

I think I'll start another thread in order to get a "clean start" with the roster on the 1st page..

Sept. 1 is perfect for me too and especially the 229 day running period. No complaints here.

Now i better start conjuring up a story or two to choose from. I have to start from scratch as i dont even have a model to work with yetStick out tongue

Yep, I saw that Hans. My concern was the possibility of a particular theme being decided on by a majority vote, and sort of hoping it didn't head in that direction.

I think you got your wish.. I only threw that in there is case it fizzled otherwise... So, by decree and definition, ALL genres are open, and I'm looking at a start-date of 1SEP 11... Anyone got a problem with that?  I can push it back aother 30 days if y'all want, but I wanna start ASAP before we lose momentum...

How about an Australian ASLAV-25 crew has been bounced by Taliban insurgents on a road in Uruzgan Province, and a firefight has broken out, Australian soldiers provide cover fire for the wounded in a deadly battle for survival... Casualties are high and

Does the dio have to be military in nature or whatever we want to do?

di-o-ram-a:  di·o·ram·a- (dhttp://img.tfd.com/hm/GIF/imacr.gifhttp://img.tfd.com/hm/GIF/lprime.gifhttp://img.tfd.com/hm/GIF/schwa.gif-rhttp://img.tfd.com/hm/GIF/abreve.gifmhttp://img.tfd.com/hm/GIF/prime.gifhttp://img.tfd.com/hm/GIF/schwa.gif, -rähttp://img.tfd.com/hm/GIF/prime.gifmhttp://img.tfd.com/hm/GIF/schwa.gif) - n.

A three-dimensional miniature or life-size scene in which figures, stuffed wildlife, or other objects are arranged in a naturalistic setting against a painted background.
In other words, build what ya want, TM...Wink
It doesn't have to be military, no... According to Shep Pines, my personal diorama hee-ro, "A diorama, in the modern sense, has come to mean any scene exeecuted in three dimensions, whether it is enclosed in a box or not."...
IMNSHO, the best dioramas do two things:
1: They show the subject "doing it's thing".
2: They tell a story (and a side-story sometimes)...
The story should be obvious and immediately apparent to the viewer... The viewer shouldn't need the diorama action (or in-action) explained to him/her...  If you include a narrative, it should be no longer than 2 or three lines...
If it takes a paragraph (or more) to describe what's happening, you've got a weak story... Any of the "Well, maybe this guy's doing this thing, or just finished doing that thing" stuff from a couple of viewers will result in confusion and generally indicates a poorly thought-out storyline...
Telling the viewer what's happening, what the story is, should be done in a single word or three, if any narrative is needed...  An example of Shep's wording went like this: "A diorama of a Sherman tank, with a dead crewman hangin' out the hatch with the tank commander desparately trying to get his .50 cal working, but to no avail, could be titled with something like "Jammed!...  Drama and action...
A couple of dismounted GIs at a crossroads (with a sign nearby reading "Malmedy-8Km", with their M8 Greyhounds pointing in different directions, and holding maps  coud be titled, "Lost"...
With the M8s pointing in different directions, and one TC looking down at his map while the other points down a road, we know who's doing the talking, and who's doing the listening, and the story is readily apparent to the viewer... It's December, 1944, the Battle of the Bulge, just prior to the "Malmedy Massacre", and these two M8 crews are about to have a really bad day...
A '75 Vette at a gas station dio with a sign reading "NO GAS TODAY" hastily painted and set near the pumps, with the "Vetteman" Wink and Staion-owner in a shouting match tells us that it's 1976 or so, and the Arab Oil Embargo has hit home to the 'Vetteman...
So just build what ya want, and feel free to brain-storm about it...
