Finding Figures
Posted by Skippert6 on Wednesday, September 14, 2011 7:30 PM

Help!  Have come up with some diorama ideas to try centered on South Pacific, WWII aviation at rest.  For example, crew chief on the wing of his Corsair reading a letter from home, etc.  My problem is I can't find a figure(s) with no shirt or in bathing trunks.

See the pictures from Tinian during the war, hardly anybody wore a shirt.  I've been to the PI, its 98 degrees and 98% humidity.  I remember walking out of the BOQ in Indonesia and your flight suit would literally change color from the moisture.

So, does anybody know where I can find 1/35, 1/32, or 1/48 scale beach figures that I could at least cut a torso off?  Maybe of Brit North Africa, or if the Aussie kits show their usual working kit; shorts, boots, slouch hat?

Thanks in advance.

I don't know how much conversion you are willing to do on the figure, but here is a link to a shirtless G.I. from Vietnam. http://www.scalehobbyist.com/catagories/Scale_Figures/VER00000377/product.php?s=0&t=5&u=0&pg=1&ppp=200&sb=stocknumber&so=a&e=0&ct=1&sc=35&man=VER

You'd have to do some backdating on the pants and boots, but with all the conversion kits out there it wouldn't be too difficult.

hope this helps!

I've been looking for similar figures for my 1/48 B-24 diorama of my uncle.

He was based in the South Pacific during WW II.

I've found plenty of flight crew figures, the kit even has 5 of them.

However, they are all dressed for the European theater, overalls, long sleeves, and flight jackets.

Let me know if you find some!

General's link had lots of places to start, unfortunately they were mostly in Nam dress, so modification is needed.  But I ordered some and am still hoping....

If you can't find what you want, you convert what you have or sculpt your own.

This is a nude male model for G scale railroading, I haven't finished looking but it would certainly work for 1/32nd scale.  Even if you had to mold the tousers and boots, etc. waist down, it would be a great start.  Don't know yet, just found this, if such is available for the other scales....

If you're up to it...

The 1/48 Monogram/Revell P-61 kit has three REALLY good PTO figures that you can cast as many resin copied of as you'll need... Including one with rolled-up sleeves, and one without a shirt..

Oldie but still usuable, if you can find it, Testor's/Italeri US Marines PTO set in 1/35th is still out on Ebay.. You'll probably want to get some better heads though...

Last, but not least, check the Model Railroading figure sets in O scale (1/48) and #1 scale (1/32)...

G-scale (as in "Garden", I think), IIRC, is closer to 1/24th scale...
