18th century port diorama

Hi y'all,again! Big Smile
now, after discovering Rod Langtons miniatures (1/1200) on finescale,i've totally fallen in love with them,so hard that i have decided to make a small diorama using his stuff. my initial idea was to have a small city port, but after i noticed that i had written "harbour set" on my order list, wich is more suitable for villages i changed for a smaller version. wich in some cases might be good.i have alot of questions to you guys, the terrain is no problems since my family on my fathers side have been railroad modellers for three generations so my dad has alot of wise words on that point. the only things i wonder about the terrain,is if i should do an entirely flat area where the town is going to be?
second question: what ships could be defending,or visiting (i can imagine the royal navy didnt put much money  in defending small villages),from the start i imagined a brigade of a big ship (64-80 guns) and three smaller ships (40 gun frigate, brig and sloop). Now i want a frigate there,so even if its not common for ships in its size to anchor at small coastal villages,it will atleast be sailing by. what other military ships are plausable to be there,in military aspect? cutters, sloops, brigs? or maybe other types. i also need help with the water,i dont know if the scale is too small for waves, either way,can someone help me out how you make it and should paint it? today i will start trying to draw how i want the terrain, long sandy shores, cliffs etc...

i really appreciate if you could help me guys!
