Out of Africa
Posted by Pvt Mutt on Saturday, November 19, 2011 11:29 PM

Hi everybody, first time caller here at this forum section.Big Smile

My Dianna is almost finished along with my first effort at painting figures and i've never built a dio before. I would like to put the two together and see what I can come up with.

The story here is,  these troops are on their way somewhere but seem to have gotten off the beaten path. While the two NCOs up front look for landmarks the rest of the crew are shooting the breeze about home and the women they left behind.

The groundwork will be done when I decide if this is the layout I want. So if you folks out there have any ideas or suggestions you would like to share just sing out.

Thanks and I hope I don't get in the way.

Tony lee

PS: Is there a rule about spelling Africa?

If one of the NCOs had a map, it would more strongly suggest that they were lost.

Great work on the figs.

Hey buddy, Great builds and great figures.  I do like the positioning and layout the way you have it.  I second the idea of the map, that was a good idea.  Do you plan on them being in the middle of nowhere, meaning flat barren ground?  You could also have them relaxing at a small oasis planning there next move.  If you did this it would provide more things you could add on the dio such as trees and some grass.  Just a little though so that you don't lose the desert effect.

I would go with some small broken bits of a ruin, maybe even Roman in character. Trees and some grass suggests water and they wouldn't be lost then as every waterhole is mapped, but there are lost Roman structures in the desert worn down by the sand and time.

People forget that during the time of the Roman Empire Libya was a major source of grain to feed Rome. It wasn't as dried and barren as it is now. Roman structures could be found where they have never been recorded.

Well guys for a first time dio I wanted to keep it simple and after seeing a photo of the area in question what i've done here today is all there is,nothing but sand and rocks.

What do you think, pretty sparse country huh?

Tony -

I like it. Very simple but to the point. My previous suggestionwas meant to be on the simple side with a single column portion or marble slab of obvious Roman source being there as a reference to the fallen empire.

Like it a lotBeer  Placing the large rocks in there worked great, it broke the flat terrain giving interest yet kept the main focus on the crew and vehicles.  Well doneYes

Tony my friend, you gave me a start there for a second or two. That first pic looked like you had gone off the deep end and were playing with your tanks in the cat box,LOL. Really though,in my un-proffesional opinion ,I think you nailed it pretty good, simple and as you said that blue sweater draws the eye right to the middle and then you just follow it around.YesYes

Tony, any chance to tell how did you do the ground work, what did you use? Are the rocks real rocks or something else?I have a Jeep that I would like to put in some kind of dessert setting. On that note, what to use for sand dunes? I guess I could use sand (duh) but what kind so that it is in scale.

OH Me lets see now. First thing is i've never done anything like this before and it was all guess work.

ROCKS:  The large one came out of the wife's garden--Others from the driveway--next smaller rocks are clay floor dry also used as cheap kitty litter and the smallest is sifted floor dry through a flour sifter.

SAND: Is silica sand for a sand blaster which is a fine white sand and sand I bought from Hobby Lobby that is really fine sand that comes in a jar. Both work well for scale, not like regular sand used in construction.

Shape your base sand and rocks then make a mixture of white glue and water. Use a spray bottle and soak the ground work down to hold it all in place when dry.

Then two shades of acrylic sand colored paint applied to give the ground some variation in color and paint the rocks too,the large rock was already the right color.

Let the paint dry.  I had different colored earth and sand chalks/pigments so i put little patches of that here and there.

There might be a better way but I wasn't told about it.Big Smile

There you go,hope this might be of help to you.

For my first I wanted to go with simple but I wanted it to say something that would have the viewer decide what that might be,know what I mean?
