There were only two units that used the Elefant, the 653rd and 654th. I've not heard that about the road planks before, or seen any photos that show anything like that. But someone else may know better. Some of these units did have their own halftracks and other vehicles, but these would have been more for command and other roles. But these units would have operated within the vacinty of a larger unit, such as a Pz Div, which would have had halftracks. Just need to find out which Div for the 653rd, i will see what i can find.

Which halftrack kit are you getting.

The elephant unit i have is the 653rd panzerjager abt in kursk.
I don't know the unit for the 251 yet,i have to wait until it gets here.
I did read in a book i have that some elephants had wood planks on
the back for infantry  to ride on to protect the tank since it didn't have
machine guns mounted on them.

I don't see a reason not to be able to use the 251. Which kit is it you have. I don't have any info to hand, but i would have thought both of the Elefant units would have had infantry support of some sort or another. It would help to know which units they were close to if you want to be accurate.
