German Scharnturm Casemate Bunker System

Saw some of these on ebay for real cheap, my question is were the casemate bunkers with the turrets used on the eastern border of Germany against the russian?
Also does the verlinden casemate bunker have a back to it, or is it open so you can view the inside?
