I have found  the seed pods from the Silver birch tree give the appearance of fall leaves.  They are commonly available in the midwestern US.  I got the idea from Richard Windrow in the Expert Model Craft DVD "Terrain Modeling." from Compendium Films.  Google or search the Forum and I think you'll find more.   If you need some  I have extra and will send some to you without cost.

Hope this helps,

Leddy

An idea I've never explored as I usually buy flock and other things from the hobby store, but they are expensive. I just thought that things like dried flaked parsley etc at the supermarket would be a lot cheaper than hobby shop items. Something I might toy with in the future, as their are so many fantastic different colours in the dried herb section. Only problem is the diorama room will end up smelling like a spice market!

I get leaves, dry them in the oven and chop them up in an old coffee grinder. That gives a great general leaf cover. For individual leaves I break apart the seed pods  from a white birch or paper birch tree. They look like this

FSM Mar 2010 issue had an excellent article about a figure diorama. The modeler used Oregano leaves that were hand picked to find the right size ones, and then painted and glued in place. If you have the issue, you should check it out! If not, just see if oregano will work for you.

What are some good fall/winter leaves that I can put lay on my tanks and the ground and where can I find them?

I saw a photo of J's Work winter leaves and wonder if they are any good for what I want to do.
