Lighting

Hello,

I'm new here and I'm not even a model-builder, but I figured model-builders probably also display their models and even create artificial lighting for them.
So I hope you'd like to answer some questions about the following:

I collect different figures and statuettes and the like, but for some I would like to create some lighting.
The first thing that came to mind is to somehow put together LED-lights and switches and wires and batteries.
Would this be a good idea and is it easy to learn to put this together? (Although I'm not a complete stranger to electronics.)
Or, otherwise, are there existing kits to light models and figures with?

Please note, I'm not looking for something that can cost just anything.
Like I said, I'm not a dedicated model-builder, I just collect some figures and such and would like to put some custom lighting to them.
I couldn't just pay 10-20 Dollars for a single light just because it's modeled realistically.
I'm more looking to create some raw lighting that would be "hidden" in a bar/strip or somewhere anyway.
For instance, I have an Alien, as in from the movie 'Alien'. I would like to get some bright white lighting from underneath for it.

So do you have any tips on how I could achieve this for not too much money?
I wouldn't mind investing in sóme equipment, but something that makes me able to put more and more electronics together and only having to buy supplies like LEDs and wiring and maybe switches and batteries.

Oh, and also, please note that I live in The Netherlands. So maybe not all products and prices might be as common around here as in the US for example.

Greetings.
