There is a common confusion, the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising was from January to April of 1943. The general uprising, which you want to depict is from late August 1944 to the Beginning of October 1944. By 1944 the Jewish ghetto in Warsaw was no more so there shouldn't be any of the Jewish grafiti around.

The main part of the General Uprising of 1944 was in the main parts of the city, the power plants, various government buildings including the main post office were the captured Hetzer "Chwat" was used. One captured Panther "Pudel" was manned by Boy Scouts (an organization banned by the ***) of the "Grey Ranks".The general uprising was when the Polish Home Army rose up to secure the city while the Soviets were sitting on the eastern bank of the Vistula. They hopes the russian presence would enable themt to free their capital, but Stalin had other ideas. He ordered the Soviet Army to hold positions and not support the LWP (Polish Home Army) and let the SS crush them. this way the democratic opposition would be less of a problem to him. In fact, the Communist underground was hardly involved if at all with the General Uprising.

See the movie "Kanal" (1957) which shows a portion of this event and does show an actual Goliath in the film. It's in Polish with english subtitles. The Goliaths were used heavily against the LWP. One use was that when a Tiger rode down the street, a Goliath was on either one of its flanks to prevent the LWP from attacking the tank from the cover of the rubbles city streets to either destroy or capture it.

Thanks for the info mike. I had trouble researching this dio due to lack of actual photos on the net. Even the german archive online only had a couple. None of the photos I saw confirmed which units of pioneers was using them either. The few photos available of goliaths are often only of allies posing next to captured goliaths!

Thanks for the references to film I will have to check this out.

You should check this site then, there is pictures of the Goliaths in the "weapons" section.

In the film, a Goliath is sent against LWP positions and a LWP soldier cuts its wire by means of an entrenching tool.

Thanks Vonryan,

This is my first year into making dio's and it's the help from the site that brings it all together. All the fine details such as using cardboard for roofing iron, coating styrofoam with plaster, etc I picked up by using the finescale forums. I can't thank the ppl on this forum enough for sharing their input not only into the skills but the history.
