1/75 Ki-43 Oscar Vignette FINISHED
Posted by oddmanrush on Friday, March 1, 2013 9:13 AM

It has been a long time since I posted anything of substance here. No excuses, so let's begin...

A long time ago I built a 1/75 (odd scale, right?) Ki-43-I Hayabusa, a vintage kit made by LS that I purchased for about a dollar or so at a model show.
The build took a turn for the worst when I used a Sharpie to pre-shade the panel lines. The problem is that when I used a clear coat after painting the Oscar, the Sharpie bled through, making it look as though I had drawn permanent marker over the top of a perfectly good model. It was disappointing, and I didn't bother to correct it...until now.

I plan on putting it into a little in-flight display over a Pacific island somewhere. To do so, I have to make some palm trees, eh? So I used some of those fake terrarium leaves you can buy at a pet store, and sliced em up to look like palm fronds...

Then attached them to the trunks...

Then I wanted to create that kinda fibrous look around the top of the tree, and the roots of the palm fronds, so I sharpened my pencil and used the shavings...

Let me know what you think. Thanks for looking!

Pretty slick Jon....how`d you ever think of that? What are the trunks made of?  They`re going to look awesome when they`re done.

Gamera, thank you, glad you like it!

Mark, good to see you back on the forums buddy! Thanks for taking a look!

Clint, the comments are appreciated, thanks for following along!

Len, good to see you too man, hope you're well! I'd seen some WIPs for palm trees using paper for the palm fronds but I decided that it would be simpler to use the terrarium leaves, especially since I had a bunch available.

The trunks are made out of sprue, which I bent using a candle. Then I wrapped copper wire around it to give it that ribbed appearance, then masking tape over the top of that for added texture...

Here is the base, completely finished!

Jon, that's a gorgeous little piece of real estate you made there. Thanks for sharing your technique. The pencil-shavings idea is very clever.

Narayan, big thanks, especially coming from you. The peanut lid is a great (cheap) base that is just the perfect size for little displays like this. I saw Wingnut (Marc) do his peanut butter panzer series and thought it was a great idea.

Greg, thanks! Most of my technique is just modified from what I've seen used before. Same idea, just different material for the most part. Glad you like it!

Ohhhhh Jon- awesome!!!

Now I want to do something similar with my egg plane Zero, though I think I'll paint the tree bright green to go with the cartoony look!

Thanks Gamera, and that is an excellent idea! I rather like those little egg planes, but haven't purchased one yet. Was thinking they'd make a great project for me and my son or daughter to build.
