B-25 Mitchell diorama
Posted by Iowahawkeye on Sunday, August 31, 2014 8:53 PM

I am posting this diorama with the hope that you guys like it, but that you also can suggest ideas and techniques that I could use to improve my next air diorama; I almost always have done armor dioramas in the past year (when I returned to modeling after a 38 year absence.  I am semi-retired from my law practice now, and loving every minute of the spare time.  I have storage tubs of kits from the 70's, and many, many new ones.  I am amazed at all the new painting and weathering techniques used now....quite a learning curve for this 66 year old Iowa product.  The detail after market kits are to die for...but I think it would be easy to go "over the top" there and maybe lose some of the fun and stress release that modeling offers.  I hope you folks like this dio...it is my first plane build since grade school...and as I am scared to death of canopy installation (back then, glue was the kiss of death too often), this one got me over that hump.  I love weathering, and hope to learn so much more from you guys.  Thanks for looking.....Robert

Looks great. Did you blow air to spin the props? I used to let my props free spin. Then I didn't like the way the prop would sit at the wrong angle due to the shaft getting loose over time.

Wow, that's just gorgeous! Thanks for posting her!

I too, hate clear parts more than any other aspect of aircraft modeling.

Looks great! I have yet to try an aircraft dio. Canopies have always been my kiss of death too. I have an S-3A that I started about a year ago.  Been an armor diorama guy most of the time. Again, beautiful job!

Wow!  I'm impressed.  Looks like the Revell kit, though it very well may be the old Monogram and was carried over when Revell took over.  Either way, beautiful job!  I'm like you, I've been impressed by the weathering envolved now and the use of air brushes.  Shoot, back during the late 70's and 80's I'd just slap a coat of paint on the thing after putting it together!  Now, it's a continuous process of the build.

I can't offer any suggestions as far as a diorama...  I've yet to try my hand at that, something that is going to change soon.  Again, great job!  Come visit us over on the Aircraft portion of the forum.  Thanks for sharing, Raymond

Like riding a bike! The only thing I'da done is putty the gaps btwn the canopy and the fuselage. Maybe tape off the clear before sanding the seam smooth. Be careful gluing clear with superglues; most will deeply haze clear plastic w/in a week. Check out the after-mkt spinning prop looks, like PropBlur. We cant wait to see your next build, Cap'n.

A While back, I read somewhere to glue all clear parts on with Elmers or the like. The clear glass doesn't have to have a strong bond as it doesn't support anything else. I was getting ready to paint my B-24, I had painted 1 coat with a brush and had the smaller windows in. but now that I got my air compressor working, I didn't want to have to mask them off. I used my exacto knife and they popped right out, and the white (Elmers) glue peeled right off and left the clear parts looking very nice and clear.
