Painting wooden parts, Rifle butts etc.
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, March 3, 2004 7:51 PM
I am new to the whole figure modelling thing, i just wanted to now if anyone had some techniques or ideas about painting the wooden parts of rifles and machine guns and other military equipment. At the moment i am working on the German 6th army at Stalingard, 42-43, its the 1/35 reissue kit by Dragon.Any tips in general would be helpful, particularly with regards to face painting which for me is very hard.
thanks.

Hey, I just bought the Stalingrad set! Anyway I detail wood parts by having a base coat on the rifle of Tamiya red-brown. Then I put in small streaks on it with Tamiya brown like wood grain. For faces, go to this website. I asked about faces too. I got this handy website on how to paint faces with acrylics. Hope everything helps!

I just finished painting a grandfather clock for my diorama. I painted it straight yellow as an undercoat, then followed it with a heavy wash of burnt sienna, streaking it as I washed. It looks great! Can't beat the wood grain effect. It sounds weird, but try it, it works.

This subject covered nicely in "Painting realistic wood grain" by Lynn Kessler in the Nov. 2003 FSM (p. 52).

Welcome to FSM.
I don't really work that hard on the rifels of the figures. I just paint it some kind of wooden color and just leave it that way. I do it only for the 1/35 scale or smaller. For bigger scales you want to put more work into it.

HI
Depending on which scale you're working with, wood grain can be easy. 1/35 scale is fairly easy, since the parts are fairly small. Just basecoat it with a dark wood colour, wash with a slightly darker colour, then very very ligntly drybrush first with one higlight colour, then even lighter with a second to highlight the grain.
