At least they looked like this when (relatively) new. They tended to oxidize to a light to medium grey, just like an old steel garbage can;
Panzer grey, dark yellow and green are also possible.
For items like that, I either go for green or yellow. I use Tamiya XF-11 for the green and XF-60 for yellow. I would then do some dry brushing, an oil wash with raw umber and some chipping especially around the rims and rings.

Ah ! Methinks they were a dark grey or grey green . Kind of like some of the uniforms . A little rust here and there , Dry - Brushed around the rims and bungs would be appropriate . This also applies to the stiffener rings as well .
