1:48 scale
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, March 11, 2004 8:44 AM
i build WWII aircraft in 1:48 scale, and would like to put some other things like a jeep, gas cans, etc. But i have not found anything in 1:48...it all seems to be in 1:35, the armor scale. Can anyone enllighten me as to why the popular armor scale is 1:35? And why dont they get consistant.

Tamiya seems to be heading in this direction-- with the tow tractor they sell for the Corsair...and their Kubelwagon....hopefully a Jeep is not far behind....

Not sure why it's like this-- I guess demand is not that great??

Bandai produced a 1/48 US Jeep way.... back in mid-1970's. With a little luck, you might find it in eBay or in some large hobby shops.

In fact Bandai had a whole line of 1/48th scale armour. I guess 1/35th scale became the standard due to Tamiya's large line of quality kits. It pretty much killed off all the other scales for armour except for the recent comeback of 1/72nd armour.

Maybe 1/48th can make a comeback.

There are a lot of 1/48 scale kits out there if you are willing to deal in resin. I went to the
Great Models website and did a search under military vehicles 1/48 scale. Manufacturers such as Gaso.line, Tarmac, FM Models and Des kits make or made quite a few kits that would work on airfield dioramas. A lot of fuel tankers and support vehicles. Not sure what the availability on these is but some are still being produced.
Good luck.
