Iraq Diorama

I was in Iraq in '03 and again in '08-'09.  There were no Scuds there either time.  The Iraqi Scuds were all destroyed during ODS ('90-'91) or shortly thereafter by UN inspection teams.  Your plan sounds good for a ODS Scud though.

You indicated you had served in the Middle East and I'm wondering if you'd seen any MAZ TELs w/Scud in your travels. I don't need photos, just some info on them. I'm in the throes of completing the Dragon kit of same and would like to put it on display in a desert setting. I used the hairspray technique with desert yellow over Russian armor green and some heavy weathering. Where were these units usually deployed...in the open (relying on their mobility) or hidden and camo'd. I think I'll try to portray it on its way to deployment, along a narrow mountain pass...I'm open for any suggestions - and tips on how to further accurize the model as it would've been in Iraqi service. BTW, I'm thinking of leaving the missile itself in Russian armor green to give the impression of urgency - that the missile was a re-load and hadn't had time to be painted in desert yellow....is that logical? TIA

One other thing to add,Gino, is that even a dead thread can be helpful.I think the original author has Too many vevicles,with too much going on,to tell a story.Isn't that what Dio's are all about.A central point,with all ancillary & less obvious items,supporting the main theme ? Guys, I know you are trying to be helpful,but this is a 7 year dead thread and the original poster only had 3 posts.  He is long gone.  It would be more helpful to start a new thread and offer/look for ideas for dios than to resurrect a long dead thread.

I was a Marine with the 1st Marine DIvision in Iraq in 2003. I can give you advice on USMC vehicles, equipment and aircraft from a Marine POV.... AAV's, LAV25's, Hummers with both MK19 grenade launchers, TOW missle systems and .50 cal MG's. M1A1 Abrams. As far as aircraft, check out Hueys, AH1 Cobras, as well as FA18 Hornets...Hope this helps..

I am working on a similar dio. Its a react to an ambush. Its going to be about 4 feet long and 1.5 feet wide. I have a horizontal road, with two Brads, an M1 and a HMMWV. They are just pulling off to engage an unseen enemy. One Brad is going to be JUST pulling off the road, the other is going to have already dropped its ramp and the dismount are exiting. The M1 is in the back just slewing its turret to the left. The HMMWV... well I haven't figured out exactly what they will be doing. There is also going to be a burned out BMP and a road sign in Arabic going to Baghdad, and perhaps a dead RPG-team, but that might make it to gory, which I want to avoid.

Its divided into the US and everyone else.

Basically any and all Soviet armor was used by Iraq. Lots of companies make Soviet armor. DML makes a bunch, so does Tamiya and many others do as well. Most used were T55, T62 and T72 tanks. Trumpeter does some Iraqi specific tanks. BMP1 and BMP 2s, BRDMs, and BTRs were used for APCs as well, all by DML . You could also do a ZSU-23-4. by DML. Revell Germany does a GAZ 66 truck too. You could also use US M109 ITOW too, we sold them a bunch in the '80s. As well as US M800 series 5-ton trucks and M113s. I saw a bunch of them burned up on the roadside while I was there. The possibilities are endless. To get some pictures, do a Google Image search for Operation Iraqi Freedom or OIF or Iraqi Vehices..

What I meant to say is there anybody making the iraqi equipment as model kits and where can I find it? I am looking for this stuff piece by piece and start my first dio in the winter. This is the best time of the year for me to build since it is too cold up here in northern minnesota to do anything else.

I would pic up some more figs. They really make the dio come to life., And plus, what are the chances of catching a few vehicle with only a 1or 2 troops?!

lol, lets see....... all about dioramas. theres simply to much to cover. i would start by getting a wooden, cured base suitable for your size, cover with foam in the place of hill, exc.. then put celluclay on top. ask more questions from there

do you have any troop figures. that might make it a bit easier to put into a dio. having the troops exiting or even entering the the vechiles.
