Help with diorama models
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, March 28, 2004 1:08 PM
I am currently working on a photography base for taking pics of my aircraft models and was wondering if there is any kits of a Opel Blitz fuel truck in 1/72 scale? So far I have not found any so I am forced to try and adopt the RAF fuel truck set from Airfix to fill in, but the trucks are not very good kits and might not work very good for what I need.

Also is there any books available that cover fuel trucks, ground support equipment, and hangers used by the Luftwaffe in WWII? I need photos mainly, I plan to build a hanger to add to my photo base and could use more photos of these buildings. I have quite a few books on late war Luftwaffe aircraft that show the planes very well but pictures of the hangers are almost always cropped out of the shots.

Where is a good source for 1/72 figures of Luftwaffe ground crew? I have recently purchased the Preiser ground crew set and would prefer to buy a set of unpainted figures, I remember a few years ago seeing several sets of unpainted groung crew in a catalog. Are these sets still being produced, and where can I purchase them in the USA?

Here is a couple pics of what I am working on.

I know this is not a true diorama, but any help from you guys in this forum would be appreciated.

Matrixone,
There are lots of vehicles that you can use in 1/72 or 1/76. A company called SHQ makes a blitz (GV55 Opel Blitz 3 ton Fuel Tanker (incl. early & late cab)) and several others. I found it here http://www.tracks-n-troops.com/shq.htm They are located in Belguim but I have heard good things from several people who have ordered from them. They also have a large assortment of figures available from several companies but the best ground crew that I have seen are the Preiser set but they were unpainted so not sure if different from what you have. You can also check out a bunch of 72nd stuff at http://www.ontheway.us/default.htm.
For Hangers, I had seen a set of stories on building german airfield dioramas on either aircraft modeling resource or hyperscale but can't find them now.
Here is a link with some ok photos
http://www.skylighters.org/history/airfields/algr85.html
and here is a card model with downloads that a guy did in 1/144. These could be printed at 200% for a 72nd hanger.

Found by doing a google search under Luftwaffe hanger.
Hope this helps.

Thanks philp!
I only have two catalogs and they did not have the products you mentioned.
The Preiser figure set I just got this week from a mail order place sent me painted figures, what I wanted was the unpainted type.
I will try the Google search on those hangers, but I prefer books if they exist.
Thanks for the info.
