Creating Modern Road Signs in 1/35
Posted by LazyEarthling on Thursday, February 13, 2020 4:34 AM

Hi all,

I make a lot of modern dioramas and could not find any decent modern road signs kit for theatres like Syria, Iraq, East Europe, etc. set in the 1990s - 2010s. I was wondering where to find resources to do so (printable signs etc) and whether anyone here could provide any tips to build those highway signs and smaller roadside signboards.

Cheers!

They are pretty easy to make yourself.  Find a picture of the sign off the internet then copy and paste it into a graphics program; I like to use PowerPoint.  Resize it to what you need and print it off on regular paper.  Cut out and glue to a piece of 0.020 sheet styrene with the back painted silver or whatever color the country you are depicting uses.  Plastruct and Evergreen make structural shapes in plastic, such as I-beams and girder section that can be used for the support for the sign.

There are kits of signs available commercially, too.

I just did a websearch on "1/35 scale road signs".  While that included a lot of hits for WW II-era signs, this search page from Scalemates was also returned:

There are entries in that list for Iraqi road signs, as well as other sets.

MiniArt is also shown, and it would be worth it to have a look at their website, because I think they've also produced sets.  They have figures and diorama accessories for the modern Middle East, so I would not be surprised if they also have sets of road signs.

Verlinden may have made some, too, and the German company Peddinghaus.  I'd have a look on eBay for those.

Hope that helps!

Thank you HeavyArty and the Baron! Your tips are great, I'll try to find commerically-available alternatives or just scratch-build them once I find the materials :)
