Questions about FOAM and Foam Cutters
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, April 10, 2004 11:40 PM
I was visiting a fantasy hobby store today and saw some foam that was used as a base for some figures, it was painted and looked really cool, wasn't styrofoam but something more dense and was cut using a hot wire cutter. Do any of you use this type of foam and if you do, what is it called and where the heck can you get itTongue [:P]. Where would be a good place to get the hot wire foam cutters and is there anything else you would recomend?

Thanks

I'm not sure what kind of foam it is, but If there is a Michaels near your home/city they are bound to have a foam cutter. that's where i got mine. It was in the styrafoam department. If they don't have a Michaels near you then just check out a local craft store.
www.michaels.com is the web address.

It was probably expanded polystyrene. The hot wire thing is called a "thermal saw".
The material is great for creating height curves or wall structures. It is also available sandwiched between two thin sheets of cardboard. This is what I mostly use. I get it from an art supply store. Thicker (approx. 3cm) sections are also used as insulation material I believe.
You can cut it with a thermal saw but a hobby knife works well also.

miller41,

I did a google search on foam cutters and came up with quite a few items on the hot wire cutters. Regarding the foam, I use the foam that comes in 4'x8' x2" sheets for house insulation and is sold at the local building supply store. It cuts well with a hot wire knife and can be used for quite a few things in diorama buildingCool [8D] It is denser than styrafoam and guite ruggedBig Smile [:D]
