The Bullion Express--Boot Hill Express (Reboot 10-4-22)

The Bullion Express

Meet my new project.

The subject line is not a typo. In the end this shall be, The Bullion Express. More on that later and as the build progresses. Hint: it will involve some gold bullion.

I didn't own this classic Tom Daniels kit, Ebay provided it. And yes. I did have to pay too much when considering its original release price, but hey-- them's the times and them's the breaks. I call it a deal when considering the months of fun I'll get from it.

I can thank my brother for this project idea because recently he was drooling over the news of a Tom Daniels design reissue, The Groovy Grader. This got me thinking on how we built these as kids and what fun it would be to build another one.

Doing some research, I came across The Boot Hill Express. This kit has always been my favorite of Daniel's designs and I remember building it when I was a kid. To be honest though--I don't think I was too successful at it. I recently watched some YouTube builds and both builders made a point that it was not an easy build. I am scratching my head about that, but I seem to recall struggling when I was a kid. I guess I will soon find out!

This will not be an OOTB build. Go figure. I went from doing a quick build to something more elaborate. I figure a cool kit like this must have some cool mods. It has too much potential.

I plan to make many mods that will for sure make it tougher. In fact-- if anyone is looking for this to be like the original kit--look elsewhere. This will not be that. My plan is to convert this horseless carriage into a design more reminiscent of what Captain Nemo might design. In fact--the theme of this project will have Nemo as part of the backstory. Wink

I am posting this thread in the Diorama category because that is what this shall be. Call it a vignette, diorama, whatever. My available time to build is limited so this shall surely be a work in process.

What's in the box?

It being what I believe is an original 1967 kit-- you get a nice musty/yellow instruction sheet, some scuffed glass, and assorted plastic parts, some attached and some not. I did an inventory, and it seems to be all there. The tires are in good shape, but I don't plan on using them either way. All in all -- looks good.

And there it is, the thrill of a blank canvas. No matter that it stinks of must. It's a model for cripes sake and that is what counts. Smile

I started work on the motor. Being a Nemo design--I'll have to dress this up some.

Oh that's cool!!!

But I thought you were going with something easy after the marathon build on the Icarus!?!

In any case GOOD LUCK and I'll be watching.

What can I say, I am a glutton for punishment. I am gonna blame Greg for encouraging me. Lol. Just kidding, Greg. I would have done this build on my own. It was already on the docket.

Seems I have an OOTB malfunction.

Good start.

No monkeys, too--that will probably cut down on Page Count Smile

Laughing, and so true. But you know... this kit comes with a skeleton. If Timmy catches wind of that, it could be fodder for a whole new mascot. Lol. Wink  Thank you for posting, Capn. It is good to see you follow here. It's kind of a strange build I am doing but I think it has the potential to be very cool.

Update: I worked on the power plant today. I am scheming on how to turn a V8 engine into something more like a Nimo (Nemo) power plant. I am afraid we are in for more fiber optic and probably some greeble. This build will have a fairly large amount of lighting effects. Or least, more than what I usually do.

I don't know how anyone of a certain age is not instantly triggered with momories of those "art" kits.  Many of us built them, to lesser and greater (usually lesser) success. (Rommel's Rod, anyone?)

We have so many great resources to pour over, now.

There is an entire genre of "hot rod" videos on YT, too.  So, refence photos of lown nitro injected engines is just a click or two away.

As modelers we have more resources, too.  Like not having to rely on ancient vinyl tires when we can case resin ones.  Or the whole aftermarket scene in car model engine bits and wiring & plumbing kits.

So, bring on Timmy's skeletons, ridgemaster, I'm not afraid! Smile

Well said,Capn. And I love Rommels Rod. It is such a creative design.

Also, well said. I had seen a Boot Hill Express where a person used aftermarket mags, and it looked incredible. Even for my build, I was just looking at ordering some multicolored Leds and wow, they look so cool how they alternate colors. They are exactly what I am looking for. I will be ordering some for the power plant. To your point, there are so many options now.

Oh goody! Man am I glad you dove right into another project, monkeys or no monkeys. Yes

I'm sure we can count on plenty of monkey business anyway.

I've had my eyes on these old kits lately, and wonder how many of them I built as a a kid.

Not quite the same genre, but I saw and didn't buy a Beverly Hillbillies truck a few years ago, figuring I'd but it later. Haven't found one since.

I do vaguely remember building the red street rod with the chrome helmet at the top, though.

I recall a unique feeling whilst building these sorts of kits. I'm eager to try one and see if that 'spell' comes back. I doubt it, and I wonder if anyone can associate with what I am trying (not very successfully) to convey?

Edit: Thanks for the link so I found this thread, Steve.

There's so much cool stuff out there now you have to restrict yourself or you'd spend forever adding more and more stuff to your model!

Hmm, I'm wondering if giving the engine block a coat of all clad natural metal, then shootiing the final metal color paint over that would give that extra-clean restored hot rod block look.

Hot rod engines need a whole rack of metalic colors any more.

Mind, this build will want some woodgrain painting, too.

Hey Greg, I am glad you made it. I was getting worried your fell in a hole or something. Stick out tongue

Greg

Once again, we think alike. There are a number of kits being released on Model Ts to old  time Fire engines. For the first time I have been thinking about buying some before I miss the boat and they get phased out. I try real hard not to buy what I can't build at the moment but these really intrigue me. Buddy-- you have to buy something and start building! Start a WIP...  that would be a fun one to watch.

Greg
I do vaguely remember building the red street rod with the chrome helmet at the top, though.

Yeah me too. THE RED BARON! That kit was Daniels top selling design. The rest was history after that.

Greg

Lol. I hear you about doubting it but try it! But maybe don't do what I do...killing the fun with all kinds of modifications. But, in some weird way, I still have fun. I like fabricating.

Greg
Edit: Thanks for the link so I found this thread, Steve.

No problem. Sorry it was not a hot link. I have been having issues with them not working. I imagine you had to copy and paste.

Thanks for chiming in, Greg.

PS: Timmy wrote me via email. He is having issues again logging in. Sigh!

all clad

You too, Capn. We are thinking similar. I ordered Alclad for this build and I just received it.  The only difference is I ordered two bottles of Brass. I am painting the power plant brass. In fact, much of this build will be brass. Mostly fixtures and such, not all. Nemo tended to use a lot of brass. Yes This kit comes with a lot of chrome parts. I doubt I will have any chrome on this build. I am looking to build a sort of mid 1800s Nemo creation.

Mind, this build will want some woodgrain painting, too.

Again, you are spot on! I intend to. Smile

Am I on ?.?.?.

Testing ......( loud feedback)

..... testing .....( static .....)

I managed to log on  ( but, for how long?)

I built the "Boothill Express" 4 times back in the day. First time(1974) was straight out of the box. No paint at all!  Second time, I painted it. Third time, I turned it into a slingshot dragster( very cool).

The 4th time, I went off on a kitbash from "heck" ... Heck I says!  I cut the front bench seat off and made the whole front flat. Then I hacked up a 1923 C-cab Ford delivery van and added the cab to the front. Other than the engine, I made it into a very respectable hearse.

Cant wait to see what you do with yours.

P.S.    there's a YouTube video of the real Boothill Express racing  the Munsters "Dragula" ....  the Boothill Express left it in the dust right off the line. ( I would be scared to drive the Express.... seatbelts ????  Rollcage ???

Dont worry about the thumbprint, paint it Rust , and call it "Battle Damage"

Hey Tim--GLAD YOU MADE IT. Welcome back from the forum dead. My mobile hearse seems appropriate. Maybe the Boot Hill brought you in? How was the ride? Good ride? Probably bumpy with them stiff springs. Stick out tongue

We have to find that video and post it. It's funny you said that about being scared to drive it. I thought the same thing. I mean man-- you are out there!  LOL. Don't roll it--don't fall off of it. A roll cage would be nice for sure.

Sorry, I dont have any pictures( I never thought of taking  any)

And yes, they ALL got the M- 80 treatment!

Also: Monogram got a lot of mileage out of that skeleton. It was in the " Rommels Rod" , the "Lil Coffin" ( which I also built multiple times) and one other one I cant think of.

I cant get logged on with my computer, so I cant provideyou a link to the Dragula/ Boothill Express, but it does appear that the Dragula has a top speed of "NOTHING" !!!

And btw. Now that our wayward son Timmy is back in the fold, the time has come to introduce our official mascot for this build.  Let's all give a big hand to, straight from the grave of Boot Hill-- the renowned showman--the illustrious-- the animated-- the leanest character you'll ever find, BONES MCGEE! Bakster, thanks for posting this, I can tell already it's gonna be too cool.

Also apologies for never chiming in on how much I enjoyed your Icarus build. Amazingly creative and I really learned a lot.

Given the number of us that are waxing nostalgic about those cool old car kits I thought folks might enjoy these links.

I have always enjoyed the My Classic Car TV program and have been unabashedly and thoroughly jealous of Dennis Gage getting to travel the country getting payed to look at cool cars. One of my favorites was watching him drive the Red Baron. What a hoot lol.

Red Baron and Firball 500...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzW2WvEfWyU

And of course I was deeply dissappointed if I missed an episode of that pinnacle of cerebral entertainment, The Munsters! I did my best to build grandpa's dragster just like the one in the TV show. Dennis also did an episode on the Munsters Cars...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QIwejUg_53U

I still laugh when I watch the episode that spawned those two cool models.

The great raceBig Smile...

Think:

Now, level off the clear sided Box. Remove the end pieces and replace With Clear plastic to which you re-attach the seat. make sure the box sets level on the frame. Check for watertightness. When proven there are no leaks. Wash gently in Soapy water. When done Rinse in very Hot water. Let drain and dry overnite.

Next day finish the rest of the model. With one exception. take a short plastic Tube or box, Clear, and support the center of the bottom. ( This also takes the weight off the suspension.) Add treated water and one Siamese Fighting Fish. Yes, There is more room in there than in the little round containers they live in at the pet shop.

Plus what a unique way to one, Keep your fish from getting to big, and two, a totally super neat enclosure that no one would expect!

I am painting the power plant brass.

I want to remember (been like three decades since the car show) the block is a gold-anodized sort of color, with a bunch of brass and chrome parts.

Like the accessory brackets were chromed, and the attached parts was various shades.

Now, for the life of me, I can't remember if the exhaust header & manifold were chrome or not.  I want to remeber that they wer, with a gorgeous bluing down near the bend.

Well that's some serendipity. I hadn't planned to build it like the 1:1 but the block being a gold flavor is not what I would have expected. Interesting.

And as for the pipes, you are hitting on all "cylinders," Capn. This is something I am mulling over. I have not decided if I will have any. The vision of this power plant is that it will be a sort of reactor. Fusion, nuclear, other, it is unclear what type ... but Nemo is a mad scientist, and exaust doesn't seem to fit his line of thinking. Anyhow, that being the case... exhaust pipes are probably not on the docket. Now Capn. If you can guide me how a reactor might need some some sort of venting... maybe I can still encorporate something. Btw. If I had planned to do exhaust pipes, bluing would have been a must! Yes

Cheers!

Oh, PS: The winter weather you guys had weeks back is making my life at work a living h e l l. Apparently, resin is manufactured in Texas and when swaths of Texas lost power, large vats of resin had been ruined. This translates to massive shortages, and massive disruptions in all things plastic to the electronics industry. We are seeing delivery delays of three months or more. I am pulling out what little hair I have left. It not a good time to be in the electronics industry. Add COVID and shipping delays... egads man.
