Creating a desert diorama featuring an old gas station/garage
Posted by Angus Somerville on Sunday, January 23, 2022 4:06 PM

Hello, I am putting together a diorama as a display for our blues/rock band's tip jar and business cardholder. The garage is built and the next step is to add some barrels maybe some car parts around the building. My vision is to have the garage surrounded by cracked desert playa with sagebrush and tumbleweed.  Has anyone experimented with clay or other material to achieve such an effect?  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I also want to add some lights both on the outside and inside. I would appreciate any suggestions as to products you would recommend (ie power supply and led lighting). Thanks so much. Angus

The cracked desert playa can be easily constructed with acrylic paint and crackle medium. Google "Crackle medium for acrylic paint" and you'll find all sorts of products as well as instructional videos. As for lighting, take a look at this company, they seem to have just about anything you could want;

For desert plants, there are many companies that make diorama plant products, such as Woodland Scenics;

With this kit, you basically get armatures that you cover with texturing material and paint. A search for scale model desert plants will yield others, including pre-finished products.
