Go to the fabric store and pick up some stuff called
tulle. It will be in the bridal section. It's used for veils or for making up those little bags of bird seed or candies at weddings.
They make it in different sizes and mesh shapes. I've seen it used for vehicle engine grills, mesh on top of afv's and there is a size and weave pattern that looks exactly like 1/35 scale chain link fence.
There is some finer stuff that would work perfect for the ac guys to put around runways etc with their smaller scales. Since its nylon it will glue and paint easy enough. When you paint it, lay a paper towel underneath, this way the paint will not "bridge" between the mesh and any excess that may block the mesh will be absorbed by the towel.
I think the minimum most fabric stores will sell is 1/3 of a yard and for a couple of bucks, you'll have enough to do almost anything you could need it for.
Also look in the ribbon section. They make a ribbon comprised of the same stuff in different density weaves that would also work. A little more expensive but pretty much the same exact stuff.
