Ready for Launch

In the early 1950s the Navy worked with Chance Vought Aircraft to develope a submarine launched surface to surface guuided missile the Regulus One. One of the important tests was to see if the design of the launcher and storage canaster for the USS Tunny and USS Barbaro would withstand the blast of the JATO bottles. This diorama depicts this scene as performed at Edwards Air Force Base just before firing. The test was a success as the desigh was incorporated on both submarines. Hope you like them Big Smile [:D]

One of the two subs that carried the Regulus missles is next to the USS Intrepid in New York Harbor. You can tour it . Its great to see this missle on the deck. The deck foreword of the Sail had two large "humps". the missles were stored in these until needed. Brings back memories. I believe you can see them on the USS Intrepid's Air & Space Museum site. Great Job Rich. Hope you get a chance to see the sub that was carrying them too.

NASAFAN,

I was stationed at the Sub Base Pearl Harbor when all five missile subs were there and had an opportunity to be on all of them. You are right, the Greyback at the Intrepid Museum is really great. I'm glad they kept at least one of them for posterity.
