Remodeled Dio No. 1 - "Attack of German Tank Crew from the NBA"
Posted by Dwight Ta-ala on Sunday, June 6, 2004 7:03 PM
Some of you may still remember my first dio which I posted here last year. Well I remodeled it last weekend and mounted it on base. I replaced the figures and added some new stuff.

It should be noted however that the figures from Academy are really horrible. No only did they look terrible (facial BLOCKED EXPRESSION but they were also way too big for the scale making them look like "The German Tank Crew from the NBA". LOL. NBA - Nazi Basketball Association.Big Smile [:D]. Anyway since I had bought the figures I might as well use them. And use them I did. The tank commander )also from Academy) was part of the original figures in the dio and I moved him forward away from the new ones to somewhat hide the difference in heights.Big Smile [:D]

Sorry for the dark pics. It has been raining here for days and I couldn't take pictures outside (but I will to get better pictures for my site.Smile [:)]).

Anyway this base was basically from my first dio (so it is still elementary looking) but the wooden fence, the figures and other supplies are new addition.

Just want to share with you...Smile [:)]

Looks great! I wasn't around to see the first one. What did you use for the tree?

OK here s what I used:

Tree: Trunk and branches - twisted wire (taped and puttied)
Leaves - scotchbrite pad with Woodland Scenics turfing materials.

Concrete Fence: Carved cnadle sticks and paperclip wires

Your diorama looks great, Dwight.
The setting is very realistic...Your repositioning of the figures make them all look the same scale. Well done!

Now that you mentioned the height problem with the academy figs, they do look like giants! But great job, nice camo on the panther!

I think when you first posted this was a bit before my time, so I am pleased you reposted it. It looks really good. Love the wall and the tree, and your Panther looks great too! They sure are buff soldiers! Arayan supermen!

Dwight,

Even with the height difference, which didn't seem to jump out at me, it is a very nice build. The scene is fantastic. Well done.

Nice, Dwight!
Yup, a tank crew of 7-footers! The guy behind the Panther is taller than the rear deck!
Maybe they were 1/25 scale??

I have always been annoyed by 1/35 figures. Were ALL Germans the same height? One could mix and match this set nicely with other sets and have a bit of variety between figures. I have seen some pics of some awfully tall Krauts. Anyway, just my opinion...

Very nice paint on the tank and a generally well composed scene. Two figures are a problem, however. The guy handling the shell...What's he doing with it? Who did he get it from? If I were handing a shell up to some one I'd go point first to have a better base to push up from. And the second is the John-Travolta-Saturday-Night-Fever guy at the back of the tank. What is he doing? He's not in the right position to have handed off that shell and he's looking off to somewhere else, distracting the viewer's gaze form the action.

Remember, if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

ajlafleche: Exactly my point. These figures are funny. Anyway as I have said I had them bought so I might as well use them. Frankensteining them with other figures will not work either because of the difference in size. Thanks for the comments.

Ryan: Well I agree that there were very tall Germans. But having 4 very tall German Tank Crew is perhaps an oddity because of the limitations of the sizes of the tank hatches. These figures would have a hard time getting into the tank.Big Smile [:D]. And just comparing the size of 4 of these figures against the tank commander (which is also from Academy) there is about a foot difference in height.Smile [:)]

J-Hulk: Maybe but the box said 1/35. Maybe washing the Panther made it shrink.Evil [}:)]Big Smile [:D]

Pedro: Tanks I mean Thanks. LOL.

Richard: Thank you, too. Sorry I just could not stop myself from laughing at these figures. I thought the other figures I got from Academy were bad but these are worse.Big Smile [:D]

Nice looking cat.

I see what you mean Dwight. They're all centers -- no guards, no forwards. Does this mean the figgys in their M51 Isherman kit are way off, too? I had planned on just changing their faces...
