mountains for dios?
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, June 9, 2004 9:37 PM
I am making a dio of the dday invastion. I would like to know what different ways there are to make a scaled hill or mountain? I would like to make a mountain about the size of the ones on omaha beach. Are there any suggetions. I would also like to put a verlinden bunker on top, so this will have to be a large hill. What different techniques are there? I would like to build it myself if that is possable? Is this possable, or am i just going to have to buy one?
Thanks,
kevin

You could look into useing some styrofoam and carve inot the shape you want or some wire covered with paper mache. I would think some of the stuff for model trains could be a very good possibility as well.

Mountains and large hills can really over power your subject so you have to be especially care about how you pose your subject and stuff around it. For instance try to include a prominant path leading to your subject (your bunker) to help direct the veiwers eye and interest towards it. Like LQ2 says styrofoam and celluclay will probably be your best bet. Good luck and post some pic's when your done I can't wait to see it.

Woodland Scenics has a set called "Mountains in Minutes" that includes everything you need to make a good sized hill in 1/35. Make sure you use reference pics of Omaha Beach so you keep them looking right. You can also get away with making them a little smaller so they don't overpower the scene like cplchilly said. Are you planning on just the bluffs or the whole beach area? That will be one large dio even in 1/72nd.
Good luck

Kevin,

You have received som great advice. The scale is so important. I am building a diorama in 1/32 scale and it is almost 3 feet square. The beaches you want to depict along with the rise in front of it was extensive. You picked a great subject. Look at the D-Day diiorama in this forum to get an idea of scale. There is a lot of good ideas there.

Good Luck and show us your progress.

Any good railroader shop should carry the Woodlands Scenics products as well as most other hobby shops.
You can also order it directly on the web http://www.woodlandscenics.com/
There are also a couple of great books out on the subject that you can find in the shops or your local library.

I use floral foam..(the green foam that you stick flower arrangements into).. which comes in bricks. I'll usually stack the bricks to the height I want, glue them together with white glue, let it dry and start carving out the kind of hill I want. Floral foam is really easy to carve and form into the shape you need. And its super cheap, $1.89 for six bolcks.
